The 9th Panzer Division was a major unit of the army of the German Wehrmacht in World War II . It is not to be confused with the 9th SS Panzer Division of the Waffen SS.

history

The 4th light division was formed after the annexation of Austria on April 1, 1938 from the rapid division of the Austrian Armed Forces . The division subsequently took part in the occupation of the Czech Republic .

Second World War

The 4th light division took part in the raid on Poland in 1939 and was reclassified to the 9th Panzer Division on January 3, 1940 . As such, she took part in the western campaign. In 1941, the division was initially used in the Balkan campaign to go to war against the Soviet Union in July . She operated in Ukraine . In the summer of 1942 it was part of the Blau company and in 1943 the Citadel company .

Weakened by heavy losses on the Dnieper , it was relocated to southern France in March 1944 , where it was completely refreshed and practically reorganized from the 155th Reserve Panzer Division on May 1st . After the Allies broke out of the invasion bridgehead in Normandy, it was relocated to the front and was involved in the Battle of Falaise . After the Ardennes offensive , it withdrew to the Eifel and the Ruhr . The division was completely destroyed in the Ruhr basin in April 1945 .

The Feldjäger Battalion 2 of the Austrian Armed Forces with a peace location Pinkafeld was after the annexation of Austria as II./Schützen -Regiment 11 in the 4th Light Division / 9. Panzer Division taken over.
