ARD Extra (own spelling: ARD EXTRA ) is a special broadcast by ARD . According to the broadcaster, the program does not deal with any breaking news in contrast to the ARD focus , but has an educational character.

History and charisma

The program was launched because of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany ; it was first broadcast on March 10, 2020 in the ARD main program Das Erste . It is broadcast during prime time at 8:15 p.m., when the special programs usually run under the title Brennpunkt . The ARD justified the new program with the fact that one would go into more depth of the topics. Some of the special programs are also broadcast in parallel in the third programs .

On May 20, 2020, it was announced that the special would no longer be broadcast "routinely" at 8:15 pm. The daily edition was not broadcast on May 14th or 19th, 2020. The broadcast should now only be "event-related", as an ARD spokesman confirmed to " Spiegel ".

On July 8, 2020, the program was used to broadcast the speech by Chancellor Angela Merkel in front of the EU Parliament in Brussels on the German EU Council Presidency . It was also about the Covid-19 pandemic , but no longer in the focus of the program. From now on, the broadcast is no longer a pure "Corona broadcast".

There are no main or substitute moderators. One of the nine ARD broadcasters is in charge of the broadcast , with the SR working on SWR and Radio Bremen on NDR. Since March 16, management has been assumed on a weekly basis. The moderators are determined by the respective broadcaster.
