The Westerland (Sylt) train station ( Frisian Weesterlön / Söl ) is the center of rail traffic on the island of Sylt . It is in the form of a terminus station on the eastern edge of the city center of the Westerland district of the municipality of Sylt . As one of three train stations in North Friesland , along with Husum and Niebüll , it belongs to station category 3 .

history

The Westerland train station was built in the course of the relocation of the march railway over the Hindenburgdamm in the 1920s. When this line went into operation in June 1927, Westerland station was opened at the same time. This connection had become necessary to avoid two border crossings for travelers to Sylt between Germany and Denmark . Thus, the Westerland station became the end point of the march railway connection , which had previously been in what is now Denmark's Tønder , from where there was a train connection to Højer and from there a ferry connection to Sylt's port of Munkmarsch .

meaning

Westerland station is the central hub for local public transport on the island of Sylt. There is a ZOB right next to the train station , from which the Sylter Verkehrsgesellschaft (SVG) bus lines connect the entire island on four routes . The routes north towards Wenningstedt-Braderup , Kampen and List and south to Hörnum were opened up to 1970 by the Sylter Inselbahn via the Westerland Bundesbahnhof station .

business

The passenger station has four tracks, which are located on two central platforms . At the head end is the reception building roughly in a westerly direction . This is among other things a tourist center of Deutsche Bahn .

Westerland is the northern end of the Marschbahn at route kilometers 237.6. Today, the station is mostly approached by trains of the DB Regio , which has been using this route again in local transport since the timetable change in December 2016. In addition, various Deutsche Bahn intercity trains, which offer direct connections to the conurbations of Rhine-Ruhr and Rhine-Main , as well as Berlin and Dresden , end here several times a day .

During the 2014 summer schedule, there were also individual trips by the HKX between Westerland and Cologne .

In the course of the economic stimulus programs , various measures were carried out by DB Station & Service AG at Westerland station. The measures focused on the upgrading of the appearance, a new platform equipment, a clear wayfinding system and the renovation of the platform surface. The wind protection systems in need of modernization and the platform roof are also part of the renovation work.

In the southeast of the station there is a small freight yard and a small railway depot with a turntable and diesel filling station. A special feature is the connection to Lidl . Furthermore, Sylt Airport has its own rail connection, which is occasionally used for the transshipment of goods.

Sylt shuttle car train

Westerland station forms the end of the car train connections between Niebüll and Westerland , which operate as the Sylt shuttle or RDC car train Sylt . Tracks 1–4 of the passenger station are flanked on both sides by tracks 5 and 7. These two are intended for loading and unloading cars. Incoming trains unload mainly on platform 7 at the northern end of the station, while the loading of the car trains for those departing is on the southern side of the station via platform 5. These vehicle interchange systems are operated by DB Fernverkehr , which was obliged by the Federal Network Agency in 2015 to allow other transport companies to use these and the associated vehicle access areas without discrimination.

Trivia

Westerland (Sylt) station is the northernmost station in Germany; the southernmost is the Oberstdorf train station .
