action

King Shadov of Estrovia has to flee to New York after a revolution in his homeland . He was initially taken with the comforts of his new life in exile , but was increasingly irritated by the excesses of modern civilization. Since his prime minister fled to South America with the treasury, after a while he has to earn money in order to be able to pay his hotel bill. His plans for the peaceful use of atomic energy are not heard. Despite his inner aversion, he has to appear on commercial television and becomes involuntarily a media star through his acquaintance with the sly but beautiful TV announcer Anne Kay.

During a visit to a school, he met the rebellious, anarchist student Rupert. His parents were imprisoned as communists . When the boy is later found in King Shadov's hotel suite, the monarch is caught in the communist hunt and has to testify before a committee of inquiry. Due to some mishaps, at the end of his questioning, he sprayed the committee members with a fire hose, but was acquitted of the allegations. The king is reconciled in the park with his wife, who has since separated from him. Rupert is now being persuaded by the authorities to give the names of his parents' friends, but his parents are finally released from prison for this. While Rupert is hailed as an example of a patriot, Shadov tells the boy that the hunt for communists is only short-term nonsense. Finally, King Shadov leaves for Paris disaffected. He offers the boy to come with him.

context

The film is Chaplin's reckoning with the McCarthy era in the USA in the 1950s and the communist hunt that went with it. Chaplin produced this film in England and only returned to the USA once in 1972 for the award of the Honorary Oscar . In further scenes, Chaplin satirically targeting boundless media commerce, especially in the still young medium of television.

It was first performed in the United States in 1973 , and in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1976 .
