Abdullah Kenan Karaca (* 1989 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ) is a German theater director .

Life

Karaca grew up in Oberammergau as the son of Turkish immigrants . His father had learned toolmaking in Turkey , his mother worked as a tailor . At the age of eleven, Abdullah Karaca took part in the Oberammergau Passion Play under the direction of Christian Stückl . At the age of 16 he moved to Munich with his older brother , where he graduated from high school .

After a semester of German studies and literary studies in Ankara , he returned to Munich and joined the Munich Volkstheater as an assistant director in 2009 , where he mainly worked under Christian Stückl. He was also assistant director at the Salzburg Festival ( Jedermann ) under Stückl . In 2011 he worked outside of the Volkstheater for the Thomas Mann adaptation Joseph and his brothers at the Oberammergau Passion Play Theater . In the same year Karaca became head of the youth club at the Munich Volkstheater.

From 2012 to 2015 Karaca studied directing at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater and graduated with a staging of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's play Katzelmacher , which he staged again in 2016 at the Kampnagel venue .

Karacas's directorial debut at the Volkstheater followed in 2013 with the production of Arabboy based on Güner Yasemin Balcı .

In June 2015 Karaca was appointed second head of the Oberammergau Passion Play 2020 by the Oberammergau municipal council . As part of the Summer Theater Festival in Oberammergau he showed in 2015 Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare in a circus tent next to the Passion Play Theater and in 2017 Geierwally of Wilhelmine of Hillern on an outdoor stage at Laberberg .

Since 2015 he has been in-house director at the Munich Volkstheater, where he opened his work in October with a production by Werner Schwab's presidents . Fassbender's Katzelmacher and Medea von Euripides followed in 2016 , 2017 Understand jihadism in eight steps! by Sasha Marianna Salzmann and Volpone by Stefan Zweig after Ben Jonson and 2018 Das Bildnis des Dorian Gray after Oscar Wilde and The Hairy Monkey by Eugene O'Neill 2019.
