Abuela Coca ( Spanish : Koks - Grandma ) is a band from Montevideo , Uruguay, founded in 1991 . Her music style is characterized by a mixture of rock , reggae , rap and African-Latin rhythms. The bands La Vela Puerca and No Te Va Gustar say that they were inspired and significantly influenced by Abuela Coca.

history

Abuela Coca was founded in 1991 by Alfredo Gianotti ( vocals and guitar ) together with the musicians Cacho Rodríguez ( percussion ), Javier Bonga ( saxophone ) and Omar Santiago ( bass ) as Los Asesinos de la Abuela Coca ( Spanish : The Murderers of Koksoma ) in Montevideo founded. The band name alludes to an old woman from the musicians' home quarter, who is honored and respected for her wisdom and healing skills using natural methods. Colloquially, coca in Uruguay also means the "friendly and warm" pet form of the grandmother.

In the spring of 1996, the first album Abuela Coca appears . The 1998 album Después te Explico (Spanish: I'll explain it to you later ) achieved gold record status in Uruguay . The album El Ritmo del Barrio (Spanish: The Rhythm of the District ), released in 2001, is recorded and sold independently and brings the first international successes for Abuela Coca. First tours in Argentina , Brazil and Europe are undertaken. In 2004 Übersee Records released the album in Germany. At the end of 2005, the album El Cuarto de la Abuela (Spanish: Grandma's room ) will be released in Uruguay and Europe . In 2007 the live album Asesinos Son (Spanish: "You are murderer") will be released for the band's 15th anniversary . A live DVD is planned for 2008.

style

The band calls their style "Tuco". They mix rock , salsa , reggae , ragga , funk , ska , jazz and traditional Uruguayan styles such as candombe or murga .

The lyrics are about the daily life of musicians in Uruguay, politics is treated more poetically.
