Career
Adelardo Rodríguez Sánchez, better known by the stage name Adelardo, who played in his youth for the clubs Ferrocarril, Betis Extremeño and FC Extremadura , came to CD Badajoz in 1957 , where he stayed until 1959, to leave the club for Atlético Madrid . There, under the direction of successful coach Helenio Herrera and Larbi Ben Barek, a star team was built up with the likes of Vavá , world champion from 1958 , Enrique Collar and Adelardo. When he made his debut on September 13, 1959 (3-0 win at UD Las Palmas ), a glorious career was heralded that only came to an end almost two decades later. In his first season he was cup winner, where he brought this title four more times. His last triumph in the Copa del Rey was also his last appearance in red and white. In total, Adelardo also won three championship titles and the European Cup Winners' Cup against Fiorentina in 1962, which could not be defended the following year. In 1974 he experienced his saddest hour as a footballer when he lost the final against FC Bayern Munich in the European Cup . Nevertheless, he still won the World Cup against CA Independiente .
The legendary midfielder, who played alongside many Atlético icons, also made 14 international matches (two goals), which helped him to have played in three major tournaments. In 1962 in Chile and in 1966 in England he was present at world championships, whereby the European championship triumph in 1964 was certainly the highlight with the Selección . After the end of his career, the Rojiblancos also set up a farewell game against the Mexican national soccer team , so that he had a worthy exit. Then Adelardo passed his time as an indoor player.
