Adolf Friedrich Furchau (born January 4, 1752 in Bremen , † December 19, 1819 in Stralsund ) was a German educator .

Life

Furchau attended high school in Bremen and began studying at the University of Göttingen in 1772 , where he devoted himself to theology , philology and history . Christian Gottlob Heyne was so impressed with his knowledge and skills that he appointed Furchau to be his daughters' private tutor. In 1779, Heyne arranged for Furchau to be employed as vice principal at the Stralsund grammar school , which was housed in the former Dominican monastery of St. Katharinen .

As vice-principal, the city gave him a house at 45 Mönchstrasse (then Haakstrasse). Furchau also had a large private library here. One of his students, Ernst Moritz Arndt , lived in Furchau's house during his school days in Stralsund. This is now used by the German Maritime Museum in Stralsund as a museum house and memorial for Hermann Burmeister . Furchau's son, Adolf Friedrich Furchau junior, also came to this house in 1787 . , who later became a friend of Arndt's.

After his predecessor Christian Heinrich Groskurd had given up the office of rector , Furchau took over this too in 1804. Due to the effects of the coalition wars , he had to administer both offices until 1815 and was then rector until 1819.

Furchau also looked after the council library in Stralsund town hall on behalf of the city .

Furchau died on December 19, 1819 in Stralsund.
