Adolph Friedrich von der Schulenburg
Adolph Friedrich Freiherr von der Schulenburg , Count von der Schulenburg since 1728 , from the House of Beetzendorf (born December 8, 1685 in Wolfenbüttel ; † April 10, 1741 in Mollwitz ) was a lieutenant general in the Prussian army and confidante of King Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia . His children founded the Wolfsburg branch of the von der Schulenburg family .
Life
Adolph Friedrich was the son of Friedrich Achaz von der Schulenburg (1647–1701), a high-ranking court official of the Brunswick dukes , and Margarethe Gertrud née. von der Schulenburg (1659–1697), sister of the Venetian Field Marshal Count Matthias Johann von der Schulenburg . At the age of 16 he went to the Knight Academy in Lüneburg in 1701 and then studied for three years in Utrecht . His military career began in 1705 in the Hanover Army, from which he switched to Prussian service in 1713 . From 1724 he commanded a Prussian dragoon regiment in Landsberg an der Warthe , which was later named after him. This unit was next to the Lange Kerls the adornment of the Prussian army, since their members were selected, well dressed and mounted.
Adolph Friedrich won the personal trust of his king, Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia (the soldier king ). Through delicate missions on behalf of the ruler, he became a close adviser, experienced generals and accomplished diplomats. In the father-son conflict between the king and his son, Friedrich II. (Who later became Frederick the Great), Adolph Friedrich von der Schulenburg was temporarily entrusted with the supervision of the stubborn Crown Prince.
When the king died in 1740 and his son Friedrich II came to power, there was a conflict between his successor and Adolph Friedrich von der Schulenburg. His dragoon regiment was demoted personally by the new king. Nevertheless, the new ruler promoted him to lieutenant general in 1740 and awarded him the highest Prussian distinction, the Order of the Black Eagle . Because of the ongoing differences with the king, Adolph Friedrich, at the age of 55, asked to resign from military service. The king refused and sent him to the First Silesian War in 1741 . There he died on April 10, 1741 at the Battle of Mollwitz at the age of 56. He is buried in the church in Beetzendorf , the headquarters of the Schulenburg family .

Adolph Friedrich's marriage to Anna Adelheit Catharina von Bartensleben (1699–1756) in 1718 resulted in the Wolfsburg line of the von der Schulenburg family.
