Emmerich Otto August von Estorff
Emmerich Otto August von Estorff (born October 28, 1722 in Ebstorf ; † October 19, 1796 in Northeim ) was a lieutenant general from the Elector of Brunswick and Lüneburg .
Life
He comes from the noble family of Estorff, who lived in the Lüneburg Heath . His parents were Ludolf Otto von Estorff († 1759) and his wife Eleonore de Farcy de St.Laurant (1701–1784), the only daughter of the Elector Braunschweig-Lüneburg Lieutenant General of the Cavalry Amaury de Farcy de Saint-Laurent (1652–1729) .
In 1741 he became an officer and in 1753 Rittmeister in the Life Guard . After the electorate of Hanover entered the Seven Years' War as a coalition partner of Prussia and Great Britain , he moved on April 1, 1757 as a brigade major from the cavalry to the general staff . He belonged to this, first under the command of Duke August Wilhelm von Cumberland , then Duke Ferdinand von Braunschweig , from 1760 as 2nd Adjutant General, until the conclusion of peace. He took part in the battle of Minden on August 1, 1759 . Estorff was sent to London with the news of victory and was promoted to lieutenant colonel by King George II on August 10th . On December 8, 1761 he became a colonel and on December 9, 1762, quartermaster general . However, this position, which he held until his death, had become a secondary position through the Treaty of Hubertusburg in 1763. In 1764 the colonel was one of the founding members of the Celle Agricultural Society .
Estorff was also chief of a cavalry regiment. First he commanded the 3rd Cavalry Regiment and since 1766 the 8th Dragoon Regiment. His headquarters were first in Grohnde on the Weser, then in the city of Northeim . As head of the regiment , he promoted the training of his officers. From 1778 Gerhard von Scharnhorst taught at the cadet school he founded in Northeim . Estorff had accepted this after the dissolution of the military school of Count Wilhelm zu Schaumburg-Lippe († 1777) on the Wilhelmstein as an ensign in his Hanoverian regiment. Estorff has recorded his own views on officer training in a memorandum, parts of which are published in the military weekly paper . On September 9, 1777 he was appointed lieutenant general and in 1781 inspector general of the cavalry.
family
He was married twice. His first wife Helene von der Schulenburg (* October 6, 1734; † December 9, 1776) - daughter of Lieutenant General Adolph Friedrich von der Schulenburg - he married on May 28, 1761. After her death, he married on July 18, 1777 in Moringen Luise Albertine von Münchhausen (born June 22, 1754 - † August 15, 1810).
