Affonso Felippe Gregory

Affonso Felippe Gregory (born February 6, 1930 in Estrela , Rio Grande do Sul , Brazil ; † August 6, 2008 in Porto Alegre , Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Imperatriz . From 1991 to 1999 he was President of Caritas Internationalis .

Life

Affonso Gregory, descendant of German emigrants from the Hunsrück , studied Catholic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome , then sociology at the Belgian Catholic University of Leuven . He was ordained a priest on February 25, 1956 .

On August 2, 1979, he was named titular bishop of Drusiliana by Pope John Paul II and appointed auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro . The episcopal ordination donated him the Archbishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, Eugênio Cardinal de Araújo Sales , on October 12, 1979; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Nova Iguaçu , Adriano Mandarino Hypólito OFM , and the Bishop of Barra do Piraí-Volta Redonda , Waldyr Calheiros Novaes . On July 16, 1987 he became the first bishop of the newly established diocese of Imperatriz .

On August 3, 2005, his resignation by Pope Benedict XVI. granted. He died of complications from leukemia .

Act

Affonso Gregory was heavily involved in the development of the Church in Latin America , in particular for relations between the countries of Latin America and the episcopal aid agencies. He worked closely with Adveniat , the episcopal Latin America relief organization of the Catholic Church in Germany.

In addition to offices in the Brazilian Bishops' Conference (CNBB), he was head of the Catholic Social Institute CERIS (Institute for Religious Statistics and Social Research), its President in 1981, and from 1983 to 1990 Chairman of the Brazilian Caritas. From 1991 to 1999 he was President of Caritas Internationalis.

Affonso Gregory also campaigned for human rights at his southern Brazilian bishopric, Imperatriz; the city is a stronghold of contract killings , so-called virgin auctions and child prostitution . As Bishop of Imperatriz, he had even received death threats because of his service.
