Archbishop Agapit ( Russian Архиепископ Агапит , secular name Alexander Vladimirovich Goratchek , Russian Александр Владимирович Горачек * 25. September 1955 in Frankfurt am Main ; † 28. May 2020 in Munich ) was Russian Orthodox Bishop of Stuttgart and belonged to the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad . He was also vicar of the Russian Orthodox Diocese of the Orthodox Bishop of Berlin and Germany .

Life

Bishop Agapit was of Russian nationality. Due to his family name, he is often wrongly assigned the Czech nationality. In fact, only his paternal grandfather was Czech, but he worked in Russia and started a family there.

Bishop Agapit first studied architecture at the University of Darmstadt . In 1979 he entered the monastery of St. Job von Pochayev in Munich . On March 29, 1983, he received the tonsure . After he was ordained a deacon on December 25, 1983, he was ordained a priest monk on April 8, 1991 . In 1995 he was raised to the rank of abbot .

In October 2000, the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church abroad decided that Agapit should be ordained auxiliary bishop of Stuttgart , the vicar bishop of the Russian Orthodox Diocese of Berlin and Germany . Thereupon, on May 30, 2001, the Consecration of Bishops was carried out in the Cathedral of the Holy New Martyr and Confessor in Munich. Archbishop Laurus Schkurla of Syracuse and Holy Trinity ( USA ), Archbishop Mark Arndt of Germany and Great Britain, Archbishop Hilarion Kapral of Australia and New Zealand, Bishop Evtichi Kurotschkin of Ishim and Siberia and Bishop Ambrosius Cantacuzène of Geneva carried out the consecration .

In addition to his services as vicar of the German diocese, Bishop Agapit also supported Bishop Ambrosius as vicar until 2006 in the administration and pastoral care of the parishes in Belgium , the Netherlands and Luxembourg .

He died on May 28, 2020 at 1:40 am of complications from a heart disease that he had suffered from in the last few years of his life.
