Agaplesion ( spelling AGAPLESION ) is a not-for-profit stock corporation which, as an "institution of the Protestant Church" , operates hospitals and geriatric care institutions in Germany together with the diaconal companies involved . The seat is in Frankfurt am Main .

The company's name is derived from the Greek “Agapéseis tòn plesíon” and means: love for one's neighbor (Gospel of Mark, chapter 12, verse 31).

history

Founders are the Diakoniewerk Bethanien eV in Frankfurt am Main, the Elisabethenstift, ecclesiastical foundation under public law, in Darmstadt , the Evangelical Regional Association based in Frankfurt am Main, the Evangelical Dean's Office in Darmstadt-Stadt, the Frankfurt Diakonissenhaus in Frankfurt am Main and the Markus Foundation dbR. The founding date was June 26, 2002. On August 22, 2002, the entry was made in the commercial register of the Frankfurt am Main local court .

Since January 1, 2005, the company in Heidelberg has been operating the nationwide Agaplesion Academy for advanced training in medical, nursing and other diaconal professions as a legally dependent, non-profit organization. It goes back to the founding in 1995 at the " Bethanien Hospital Heidelberg - Geriatric Center", which in turn was joined in 2006 by the non-profit corporation Agaplesion with a stake of 60 percent.

Since 2008, the company has been a 25 percent partner in the edia.con association based in Chemnitz .

In February 2010, the company acquired 60% of the shares in Bethanien Diakonie gGmbH, based in Berlin-Steglitz , which operates five fully inpatient care facilities with a total of 533 places.

On May 1, 2010, the company took over the majority of HDV gGmbH, founded in 2005, which goes back to the Hessischer Diakonieverein eV and operated four diaconal hospitals and seven senior centers in southern Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate . The HDV GmbH also includes the service companies IDG mbh (infrastructure and service company of the HDV mbH), ComDiak Service GmbH (cooperation with Communis Rhein-Main GmbH) and HDL Servicegesellschaft (in cooperation with Lieblang service group Management GmbH).

On May 9, 2012, the Federal Cartel Office spoke out against the plans to merge the Agaplesion Hochstift Evangelisches Krankenhaus in Worms with the municipal Klinikum Worms gGmbH due to its “dominant position” in the Worms area, but the merger with proDIAKO from Lower Saxony was approved in September 2012.

Institutions and participations

Agaplesion has more than 100 facilities nationwide, including 23 hospital locations with over 6,300 beds, 38 residential and care facilities with over 3,000 care places and an additional 885 supervised apartments, four hospices, 34 medical care centers and 16 outpatient care services and a training academy. In addition, Agaplesion provides training in health and nursing at 15 locations.

Agaplesion had a market share of 4.7 percent of the planned hospitals in acute geriatric hospitals in 2010 and is also one of the largest geriatric providers in Germany. Agaplesion also maintains the Agaplesion Academy Heidelberg with a focus on geriatric education.
