Air Atlanta was an airline based in Atlanta , Georgia , United States that served over a dozen cities from Atlanta in the 1980s.

history

The airline was founded in February 1984 by lawyers Michael Hollis and Daniel Kolber. In addition to the point-to-point service as an independent airline, they also offered passenger flights for Pan American World Airways as "Air Atlanta Pan Am Express". These flights connected Pan Am passengers to and from flights operated by Air Atlanta.

On February 1, 1984, Air Atlantas was the first to fly a Boeing 727-100 from Atlanta to Memphis . From April 1, 1984, a non-stop service was offered from Atlanta to Memphis, Miami and New York JFK . From July 1, 1985, a non-stop service from Atlanta to New York LaGuardia was also offered. The airline later also offered flights to Detroit , Fort Myers , Greenbrier / Lewisburg , West Virginia , New Orleans , Orlando , Philadelphia , Tampa and Washington, DC and National Airport .

When Air Atlanta began operations, each seat became a first class seat, with meals served on white linen , fine china and crystal glasses. Air Atlanta then introduced two-class service on the Boeing 727 , with 2-2 seating in First Class and 2-3 or 3-3 seating in Economy Class . The airline flew three million passengers before it ceased operations on April 2, 1987 due to bankruptcy. At the time when that was certain KLM offered to invest $ 10 million in Air Atlanta if investors would agree. Investors turned down the offer, although Air Atlanta made progress. Air Atlanta had a perfect safety record and was responsible for many innovations in the aviation industry, including funding its business through the use of the Zero Coupon Convertible Note.

fleet

Air Atlanta's fleet began with five Boeing 727-100 aircraft . Five more Boeing 727-200 aircraft were added over time.

Several exceptions were non-stop flights between New York JFK Airport and Lewisburg , West Virginia , via Greenbrier Valley Airport (LWB), between New York JFK Airport and Philadelphia (PHL), and between Tampa (TPA) and Orlando (MCO) and also between Tampa and Fort Myers (RSW). In addition, Air Atlanta operated a direct layover between a number of destinations, with most of these flights making a stopover in Atlanta, which also served as the airline's connection hub.
