The Aiterach or Aitrach is a right tributary of the Danube in Bavaria , with a length of 39 km.

From the confluence of the Kirchholzgraben near Dengkofen in the municipality of Mengkofen to its confluence with the Danube north of Ittling, the Aiterach is a second-order body of water over a length of 28.09 kilometers.

Surname

The meaning of the name is derived from the Indo-European oid for swell and the Old High German term aha for water. The river name means something like "swelling water". The river gave the place Aiterhofen ( Hof an der Aiterach ).

course

The Aiterach rises on the east side of Pram in the municipality of Bayerbach near Ergoldsbach and flows into the Danube at river kilometer 2314.2 north of the Straubing district of Unteröbling . On the last section of almost 1.8 km, the Aiterach Canal runs parallel to the right, mostly at a distance of 45 meters, which then increases to 360 meters when the Aiterach bends to the left, and flows into the Danube 200 meters below the Aiterach.

In the Aiterach valley, the state roads St 2138 run from Mühlhausen to Mengkofen and St 2141 to Salching and the B 20 at Aiterhofen for a few kilometers.

Renaturation

In 2016 the United Nations included the 130 hectare renatured floodplain landscape Aitrach-Aue near Salching and Aiterhofen in the list of projects of the UN Decade of Biological Diversity . The municipalities of Salching and Aiterhofen received a corresponding award.
