The Al-Zahraa ( Arabic الزهراء, DMG az-Zahrāʾ ) was an Iraqi RoRo ship put into service in March 1983 , which was arrested in Bremerhaven from 1990 to 2011 . The Iraqi State Enterprise for Water Transport owned the Iraqi- flagged ship.
The Al-Zahraa , built under hull number 426 on the Danish Helsingør Værft, was one of three sister ships . The launching of the ship was on 19 March 1982nd
The ship was equipped with a 50-tonne stern ramp and a ship's crane on the starboard side . A helicopter landing deck was located behind the forward superstructure . The ship of two powered MTU - twelve-cylinder - diesel engines with 4413 kW power , the two propeller worked.
The Al-Zahraa came on July 14, 1990 the morning after Bremerhaven because there with the engine works Bremerhaven , the machine should be repaired. After the repair work had started and the machine had been removed for repair, the United Nations imposed an embargo on Iraq because the country had attacked Kuwait on August 2 of that year . Since then, the ship was in Kaiserhafen I in Bremerhaven launched . The 30 or so seafarers on board the ship were flown to their homeland, initially only one sailor stayed on board to guard the ship. Only after a year was the number increased to two, each of whom lived on board for about half a year.
In 1997 the ship had to go to a dock for repairs because water penetrated the ship through the dilapidated outer skin. The sea chests were also welded tightly in order to minimize the risk of the ship suddenly sinking.
On August 3, 2005, the ship was moved to a mooring in Fischereihafen II in Hall X, in order to create space in Kaiserhafen I for ships expected for Sail 2005.
For a long time, the future of the ship was unclear. In 2009, the federal government intervened to look for a solution. On July 8, 2011, the Al-Zahraa left Bremerhaven after almost 21 years of berth and was towed to Klaipėda , Lithuania , to be scrapped .
