The Stone Roses were a British rock band formed in Manchester in 1984 . They are considered to be the pioneers of Britpop and one of the most influential bands in England of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Career

Apparently, singer Ian Brown and guitarist John Squire already knew each other from the sandpit and then initially lost sight of each other. However, they later met again and formed the punk band The Patrol. This remained without significant success. In 1984 the band The Stone Roses formed with Pete Garner on bass, Andy Couzens on rhythm guitar and Simon Wolstencroft on drums. They played their first concert in October of the same year as opening act for Pete Townshend . In 1985 they already recorded a studio album with Martin Hannett . But since they were dissatisfied with the result, only a first single was released.

Gary "Mani" Mounfield took over bass in 1987. According to Ian Brown, this was a turning point for the band ("When Mani joined it almost changed overnight. It became a totally different groove ... Straight away, everything just fell into place"). After a gig in London in early 1988, both Zomba and Rough Trade wanted to offer the Stone Roses a record deal, and Rough Trade even financed the recordings for a new single Elephant stone with Peter Hook . Finally, the Zomba label Silvertone Records signed a contract with the band for eight albums and released Elephant Stone in October 1988.

In May 1989 the debut album The Stone Roses, produced by John Leckie , was finally released . After the success of the more dance-oriented single Fools Gold (number 8 in November 1989), the album rose to number 19 in the British charts. Since then, it has been rated a classic by many music critics. The Stone Roses won the 1989 NME Awards in four categories ( Band Of The Year , LP Of The Year , Single Of The Year , Best New Band / Artist ) and formed one of the pillars of the Madchester scene. In May 1990 they played an open-air concert on Spike Island in Cheshire in front of an audience of 27,000 .

After lengthy legal disputes, the band were able to terminate their contract with Silvertone, but this delayed the release of a follow-up album. Under the direction of the new label Geffen , the second album Second Coming was finally released in December 1994 . It peaked at number 4 on the UK charts. After several changes in line-up, a tour of Great Britain in late 1995 and John Squire's departure from the band in April 1996, the Stone Roses appeared at the Reading Festival in August 1996 with a performance that was devastated by fans and music critics alike. In October 1996 the band broke up.

On October 18, 2011, 15 years after the separation, the British music magazine New Musical Express announced the reunion of the Stone Roses. The band performed together again at festivals for the first time in 2012. On May 12, 2016, the Stone Roses released All for One, their first single in 20 years, followed by the song Beautiful Thing on June 10, 2016 . On June 24th 2017, after a concert in Hampden Park in Glasgow , Ian Brown announced the breakup of the band with the words "Don't be sad it's over, be happy that it happened". Ian Brown released his first solo album since 2009 with Ripples in February 2019. In September 2019 John Squire again confirmed the end of the Stone Roses.
