The album is considered to be one of the ignitions of the Madchester boom, with which not only The Stone Roses but also bands such as the Happy Mondays , The Charlatans and the Inspiral Carpets became well known, especially in Great Britain. The album also influenced the Britpop movement around Oasis and Blur , which peaked in the mid-1990s.

In the best lists, especially in Great Britain, the album regularly achieved top positions. It was voted the best British album of all times by the New Musical Express , in 1997 it came in second place in the Music of the Millennium and in 1998 the readers of Q magazine voted it in fourth place. In its March 2006 edition, the German Musikexpress counted the album among the 50 best debut albums of all time, and in the March 2003 edition the album was voted seventh of the 50 best albums of the 1980s . The music magazine Rolling Stone lists The Stone Roses at number 498 of the 500 best albums of all time . The album is one of the 1001 albums You Must Hear Before You Die .

Liam Gallagher from Oasis as well as Robert Levon Been of the California Black Rebel Motorcycle Club name the album as their favorite record and attribute the beginning of their own musician careers to it.
