The Albert Schweitzer School Kassel (short: ASS ) is one of the oldest high schools in Kassel and has been the Hessian European School since 2010 . It is attended by approximately 1,050 students from grades five to twelve / thirteen.
history
The school was founded in 1869 as a first-order secondary school; the first school building was a building in Kassel Wolfsschlucht. In 1871 the school moved into its new domicile on Schomburgstrasse. In 1877 Prince Heinrich of Prussia passed his secondary school leaving certificate there, and since 1882 the school has been run as a secondary school. In 1911 the school community then moved into an imposing new building on Wilhelmshöher Allee. This building was completely destroyed in the Second World War. Today the Jacob-Grimm-Schule (Kassel) is located on the site .
After the Second World War, school operations were resumed in the former building of Oberrealschule I, which was closed in 1945, at Kölnische Strasse 89 under the school name Realgymnasium Kölnische Strasse. Since 1956, the school has been called Albert Schweitzers .
deals
The pupils of the Albert Schweitzer School can learn French as their first foreign language in the fifth grade, as an alternative to English lessons . Afterwards there is the possibility of learning subjects bilingually from the eighth grade, i.e. optionally in German-English or German-French. The subjects history and politics and economics are alternately offered here. The school also offers the possibility of exchanges with schools in France and French-speaking Switzerland . The school also has a French Library (CDI) which offers a selection of French literature for all ages and various French magazines.
The Albert Schweitzer School also supports the North Hesse Student Research Center, where students from all ages work together on scientific projects. A separate building was erected on the school premises in May 2011 and opened in mid-June 2012. Even before completion, it received awards for its innovative architecture.
The rowing club TRV ASS has also been successful nationwide for decades. Regular participation in youth training for the Olympics was crowned, among other things, in 2004 with a victory for the girls' gig in the national finals.
In addition to working groups , especially in the field of music, and the exchange programs with French and Swiss schools, the school also offers an exchange with England .
In addition, the ASS offers an opportunity to contribute to decisions and consultations. The student council (SV) is elected by the students and holds meetings with all class representatives in the school and runs a blog.
social commitment
Since 1956, students at the Albert Schweitzer School have been collecting annually for the aid organization for the blind.
In addition, the school has been working with the Indian Aid Association since 1974 . For 30 years, a school festival called “RiPa” (based on the supported Indian villages along the Río Pachitea in Peru ) has been taking place on the first weekend in December, where school classes collect money through various campaigns in and around the school building. For example, Christmas things are made or baked.
