Albert Victor Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Hillsborough PC (born May 1, 1885 in Weston-super-Mare , Somerset , †  January 11, 1965 in London , United Kingdom ) was a British Labor Party politician and British Defense Minister .

Life

From 1922 to 1931 and 1935 to 1950 he was a Labor MP in the House of Commons for the Sheffield constituency . In 1929 he was accepted into the Privy Council . He held the office of First Lord of the Admiralty three times (1929-1931, 1940-1945 and 1945-1946) and in 1941 was awarded the Order of the Companions of Honor . In the government of Clement Attlee in 1946 he was Minister without Portfolio and from 1947 to 1950 Minister of Defense . 1950 to 1951 he was Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster .

He was raised to the hereditary nobility on January 27, 1950 as Viscount Alexander of Hillborough , of Hillsborough in the City of Sheffield , and thereby received a hereditary seat in the House of Lords . On January 30, 1963, he was also the title of Earl Alexander of Hillsborough and Baron Weston-super-Mare , of Weston-super-Mare in the County of Somerset , bestowed. In 1964 he was accepted as a knight in the Order of the Garter . Since he did not leave a son, his title of nobility expired with his death in 1965.

In his honor, this is Cape Alexander named in Antarctica.
