Laufen an der Eyach is a district of Albstadt in the Zollernalbkreis in Baden-Württemberg . It is located on the Swabian Alb , about halfway between Stuttgart and Lake Constance .
history
The place was first mentioned in 793, when goods or rights in "Luofo" were given to the St. Gallen monastery . The name of the village refers to the six meter high waterfall of the Eyach , called Eyachlauf - running is an old expression for rapids . The place was probably originally just a small mill settlement in Burgfelden , which was only expanded into a farming settlement after 800 by the St. Gallen monastery. At first, the place grew only slowly. Before 1266 it belonged to the Counts of Zollern , came to Württemberg in 1403 and belonged to the Balingen district here . Between 1560 and 1630 there was a period of extremely strong growth. The Thirty Years War destroyed more than half of the village. See also the article on the ramparts Burg Gräbelesberg .
The paper mill , which was built in 1740, gave the economy a boost . The Laufen paper mill also supplied the Cotta publishing house, which had Goethe's works printed on it.
From 1806 the place, subordinate to the Oberamt Balingen , belonged to the newly established Kingdom of Württemberg and from 1919 to the national state of the same name .
In the 19th century, Laufen expanded significantly, not least due to the fact that it was incorporated into the Württemberg railway network in 1878 during the construction of the Zollernalbbahn . In 1895 there was a major flood disaster in the town when the Eyach overflowed its banks and killed 15 people.
Laufen came to the district in 1934 and to the district of Balingen in 1938 . On February 20, 1945, 19 people were killed in a heavy bomb attack. The formerly independent community voluntarily joined the large district town of Ebingen on May 1, 1973 and became part of the newly formed town of Albstadt on January 1, 1975 as part of the community reform .
The chapel of St. Gall, first mentioned in Laufen in 1451, was probably a foundation of the St. Gallen monastery and belonged to the parish of Burgfelden. After the Reformation , the chapel temporarily became the seat of its own Protestant parish, until the place was incorporated into the parish of Dürrwangen. In 1897 Laufen became its own parish again after a new church had been built in 1875.

The blazon of the coat of arms of Laufen an der Eyach shows a black wavy bar with three green fir trees (two above, one below) in silver. The wavy bar stands for the river Eyach, the fir trees for the forestry operated on site. The coat of arms was awarded to the municipality on June 8, 1949.

Economy and Infrastructure
As already indicated in the Laufen coat of arms, forest management plays a major role here. In particular, these are the so-called Klenganstalten: These are companies that extract the seeds from the pine cones in order to then sell them to forest companies and tree nurseries.
traffic
Laufen is located on the Tübingen - Sigmaringen railway line, known as the Zollernalbbahn , and on the 463 federal road .
