biography
At the beginning of his career, Alessandro Roberto competed in FIS races and national championships for several years , mainly in his specialty giant slalom , but rarely made it into the top ten. After reaching the 1998/99 first podium of the season and on 2 December 1999 with a victory in the giant slalom in Alleghe first time won a FIS race, he went up to the Italian national team and from then on came in the World and European Cup used . In the European Cup in the 1999/2000 season, with the exception of the first race in every giant slalom, he was among the top ten, achieved two second places in Sella Nevea and Kappl at the end of the season and was fifth in the overall giant slalom ranking. Until January 2001 he continued in the European Cup alongside the World Cup and still finished almost all races in the top 10.
Twelve days after his European Cup debut, Alessandro Roberto also took part in a World Cup giant slalom for the first time on December 19, 1999. While he did not qualify for the second run in the first race, he won his first World Cup points in his second outing on February 5, 2000 with 24th place and three weeks later achieved his best result of the season with 15th place in Yongpyong . In the 2000/01 season , with the exception of the World Cup final, he already took part in all World Cup giant slaloms and this time achieved twelfth place in Adelboden as the best result. It was also used at the 2001 World Championships in St. Anton am Arlberg , where it took 13th place. The Italian achieved his best ever World Cup result on December 20, 2001 in the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora , when he finished seventh. Then he was able to start at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , but only reached 22nd place there. The second top 10 result of his career was achieved by Alessandro Roberto on December 15, 2002 with ninth place in the giant slalom of Val-d'Isère and with consistent performance he reached 17th place overall in the Giant Slalom World Cup in the 2002/03 season - his best result . In the previous year he had achieved 19th place overall. The athlete, who belongs to the sports group of the Italian Army ( Corpo Sportivo dell'Esercito Italiano ), was also successful at the 2003 Military World Ski Championships in Pyhätunturi , where he won the bronze medal in the giant slalom.
The Italian's career was interrupted at the beginning of the 2003/04 season . When he fell in the giant slalom in Sölden , he suffered injuries to his left knee and had to take a break for the rest of the winter. In his 2004/05 comeback season , Roberto failed to match his earlier results. In the World Cup he could only score twice and in the European Cup he did not achieve top 10 results, only at the Military World Ski Championships in Predeal in 2005 he won the silver medal in the giant slalom. In the 2005/06 season he was therefore only used once in the World Cup, but remained without points. He predominantly competed in European Cup races, achieved several top 10 results in the second half of the season and was third on the podium in the last giant slalom in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee . He finished eighth in the giant slalom classification. For the only time he also took part in two Super-Gs in the European Cup, but did not make it into the top 30. After winning two giant slaloms in the Nor-Am Cup in November 2006 , he returned to the World Cup from the 2006/07 season for use. He was regularly in the points and was twice in the top 20. In March 2007 he also became Italian runner-up in the giant slalom behind Peter Fill . After another injury, he had to end the following 2007/08 season in December. In the winter of 2008/09, Alessandro Roberto only took part in one world and one European cup race and then ended his career.
