Joseph Alexander von Helfert
Joseph Alexander Helfert , from 1854 Freiherr von Helfert (born November 3, 1820 in Prague , † March 16, 1910 in Vienna ) was an Austrian politician and historian.
Life
Joseph Alexander Helfert is the son of the legal scholar Joseph Helfert and his wife Anna, b. Carpenter. From 1848 to 1860 he was the kuk Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Education and 1860/61 Minister of Education. In these functions he campaigned for the equality of nations in the school system within the monarchy. As a knight of the Iron Crown Order, 2nd class, Helfert was elevated to the status of Austrian baron on August 18, 1854 in Vienna . Since 1881 he belonged to the manor house .
He was the founder of the Institute for Austrian Historical Research (1854) and, with Franz Martin Schindler, of the Leo Society (1892), of which he was president until his death. The Austrian Leo Society, after Pope Leo XIII. named, was an association for the promotion of Catholic knowledge.
From 1859 to 1861 Helfert was deputy president of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde , from 1859 to 1868 he was president of the Alterthums-Verein zu Wien and from 1863 to 1910 he was president of the Kk Central Commission for the research and preservation of monuments .
Helfert was buried in the Pottenstein cemetery in Bohemia. In 1922 the Helfertgasse in Vienna- Meidling was named after him.

Helfert wrote narrative writings and made translations from Czech. As a historian, he dealt with the history of Austria with a focus on the revolution of 1848.
