Alexander Graf von Igelström ( Russian : Александр Евстафьевич Игельстром; born August 10, 1770 in Kerrefer , † May 2, 1855 in Reval ) was an Imperial Russian major general . The imperial count came from the Swedish-Baltic noble family von Igelström and was lord of Kerrefer and Kabina.

Military career

His military career began in 1781 at the Imperial Russian Pag school in Saint Petersburg . From 1788 he served as a chamber page with the Empress Katharina II. In 1791 he was promoted to lieutenant and transferred to the Preobrazhensk body guard regiment and later promoted to first lieutenant . As a second major , he served from 1792 in Warsaw as an adjutant to his uncle, General Otto Heinrich von Igelström (1737 - 1823). In 1793 he moved as a lieutenant colonel to a horse regiment and took part in the campaign against Poland in 1794 . In 1797 he was promoted to colonel and in 1799 to major general.

In September 1812 he returned to active military service in the Sixth Coalition War against Napoleon and was appointed leader of the cavalry reserve of the Wittgenstein corps . He fought against the French troops at Polotsk (October 20), Czasniti on October 31, and at Smoliany (November 14) as well as in the Battle of the Beresina (November 26). For his missions he was awarded the Order of Vladimir 3rd Class and the Order of Anna 2nd Class. Then his troops took part in the pursuit of the retreating French to the border of East Prussia , in the occupation of Königsberg and Elbing . He distinguished himself in the attacks on the remnants of Jerome Bonaparte's corps and reached the area around Magdeburg . For this mission and in the Battle of Lützen , he received the Order of St. Anna, 1st class. In the further campaign of 1813 his troops also fought in the battle of Bautzen and in the battles near Reichenbach and Görlitz . Because of an illness he was only able to participate in the following operations again from January 1814.

In 1836 he was retired from the Imperial Russian Army . In 1855, Tsar Nicholas I confirmed Count Alexander von Igelström's status as Roman Count.

Origin and family

His father was the Polish chamberlain Harald Gustav Graf von Igelström (1733–1804), who was married to Anna von Münnich (1732–1760) and Sophie von Münnich (1727–1782) in his first marriage . His paternal uncle was the infantry general Otto Heinrich Graf von Igelström. Alexander married Juliana Eleonora Countess Douglas (1781-1833), heir daughter of Robert Archibald Count Douglas (1754-1818), their descendants were:
