Alfred Cumming (politician)
Alfred Cumming (born September 4, 1802 in Augusta , Georgia ; † October 9, 1873 ibid) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ).
Life
Cumming served as a sutler during the Mexican-American War for Zachary Taylor and later for the Jefferson Barracks Military Post in Missouri . He also served as superintendent of the Upper Missouri Indian Superintendency and mayor of Augusta.
Because of rumors of alleged secessionism by the Mormons , President James Buchanan sent the army in 1857 to forcibly remove Brigham Young as governor of Utah and replace him with Alfred Cumming. The resulting altercation is known as the Utah War . The conflict marked the end of Brigham Young's governor in April 1858. Since that time, ecclesiastical and political leadership in Utah have not been in the same hands. Cumming held the post until 1861 , when he returned to Washington, DC .
His wife died in 1867. He was the brother of Henry Harford Cumming (1799–1866) and the uncle of Brigadier General Alfred Cumming .
