Alfred Wilhelm Ferdinand von Kaphengst (born January 23, 1828 in Potsdam , † December 25, 1887 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

Alfred was the son of the Prussian major general Ferdinand von Kaphengst (1795–1854) and his first wife Isabella Angelika Julia, née Schickler (1805–1837).

Military career

Kaphengst attended high schools in Potsdam and Berlin. He then studied law at the University of Bonn , where he became a member of the Corps Palatia in 1849 . On April 9, 1850, Kaphengst joined the Guards Dragoon Regiment as a dragoon and was promoted to second lieutenant on July 15, 1851 . As such, he graduated from the military riding school for one year from October 1, 1854 and was then a regimental adjutant from October 25, 1856. On July 10, 1858, he was promoted to prime lieutenant .

As Rittmeister , he was transferred to the 2nd Guard Dragoons Regiment in 1864 as an adjutant to the Guard Cavalry Division . During the war in 1866 , Kaphengst took part in the Battle of Königgrätz and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class with swords , for his services after the end of the war . On October 30, 1866, he took over as chief of a squadron in the 2nd Hanoverian Dragoon Regiment No. 16 in Northeim, and in 1868 he was appointed as a major regular staff officer in the Magdeburg Hussar Regiment No. 10 . From 1869 he was with the 2nd Guard Uhlan Regiment , with which he took part in the war against France . He fought at Gravelotte , Beaumont , Sedan , Bapaume and Saint-Quentin and took part in the siege of Paris and the storm on Le Bourget . Awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class, Kaphengst was commissioned on August 8, 1871 with the command of the Rhenish Dragoon Regiment No. 5 and finally appointed its commander on December 12, 1871. In this position on 12 January 1872, the transport followed to Lieutenant Colonel and on 19 September 1874 to Colonel . As such, Kaphengst was then transferred to Karlsruhe , where he was appointed commander of the 3rd Badischer Dragoon Regiment "Prince Karl" No. 22 .

On October 16, 1879 Kaphengst was for health reasons due to a severe nervous suffering disposition made. At the same time he was awarded the Order of the Crown II. Class and granted him permission to wear the uniform of the 3rd Badische Dragoon Regiment "Prince Karl" No. 22. On February 12, 1881, Kaphengst was given the character of Major General.

He married Hermine Emilie Wilhelmine Adolfine von Le Suire (1841-1924) in Altenmuhr on November 25, 1863 . From the marriage the son Elgar Asmus (1865–1957) emerged, who married Elisabeth (Lissy) von Krogh (1875–1947) in 1899.
