Alice is a feature film from 2005 by the Portuguese director Marco Martins .
action
It has been 193 days since little Alice was lost in the streets of Baixa Pombalina , the lower city of Lisbon . Since then, Father Mário has roamed the streets and squares of the city, pasting and distributing leaflets with the missing person's report, daily walks the route on which Alice disappeared, and has installed cameras in apartments and houses that film these routes around the clock. Mário adheres to this daily routine, which inevitably keeps him in contact with other people and saves him from having to put up with the loss of his daughter, as he believes he will soon find her again through his efforts. In the evening he is on stage as an actor. Meanwhile, mother Luísa is already worn down by her grief and can barely cope with her everyday life. The couple's communication is visibly difficult while at the same time remaining closely connected through their shared fate.
reception
The film captivates with the oppressive language of its images and the acting portrayals (especially Nuno Lopes as father and Beatriz Batarda as mother), and the reduced, soulful film music by pianist Bernardo Sassetti is impressive . Alice manages with relatively few dialogues and therefore with many unusual settings. Despite this apparently little audience appeal, Alice surprised with a high number of visitors. In October 2013 it was one of the 25 most-watched Portuguese films (since the introduction of public statistics in 2004).
Alice has won a number of prizes at international film festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival , the Caminhos do Cinema Português in Coimbra , the Mar del Plata Film Festival in Argentina and the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival . Nuno Lopes was then honored as a 2006 Shooting Star by the European Film Promotion .
Alice was released on DVD in 2006 by Lusomundo (No. 324/2006), including edição especial , as a double DVD special edition in a slipcase.
