Alice Cooper slips into the role of the serial killer Spider, who wraps his exclusively female victims in spider silk. Spider wants to create his own spider, which is why he cuts off a leg from each of his victims. After he has already severed a leg from seven victims, complications arise with the eighth, as Spider falls in love with his last victim.

Cooper said of the style of the album:

"I like to work like this: Telling a story in individual songs, which together result in a coherent concept, but also work on their own."

- Alice Cooper: Poet, Golfer, Rampensau in: Rocks - Das Magazin für Classic Rock, issue 04.2008, page 32

Cooper won over Greg Hampton and Danny Saber for songwriting and production , while his band's bassist, Chuck Garric , guitarist Keri Kelli , Ozzy Osbourne and Warrant singer Jani Lane contributed to the creation of individual songs. Lane and Osbourne were not involved in the recordings, however. Slash took over the lead guitar for Vengeance is Mine .

Along Came a Spider was released on CD and online music services on July 29, 2008, and the album was also available on record in Germany . The album cover of the record edition differed from that of the CD edition.

Chris Steffen from Rolling Stone awarded 3/5 stars for Along Came a Spider . He emphasizes the album lyrically, but complains that the musical influences of Cooper's longtime producer Bob Ezrin are missing. Cooper got Greg Hampton and Danny Saber for the album, both of whom were also involved in the songwriting. Musically, the album moves between healthy retro and ultra-modern. The drum sound is criticized because it “comes across as a bit too smooth”.

Frank Thiessies from Metal Hammer sees the album in the tradition of its predecessors Welcome to My Nightmare and The Last Temptation , "garnished with a dash of zeitgeist". The song Wake the Dead is reminiscent of Beck's Devil’s haircut and "with its extremely distorted guitars and the somewhat idiosyncratic hookline with dominant bass of a bastard from industrial Danzig and psychedelic Ozzy ". Wrapped in Silk is comparable to David Bowie in terms of rhythm .

Alexander Cordas from laut.de also draws a comparison with Bowie : “The morbid ballad" Killed By Love "and the theatrical" Salvation "have an unconcealed Ziggy Stardust flair. But the two songs are among the best Bowie rip-offs in recent years. ”The songs Vengeance is Mine and Killed by Love , which is seen as an homage to the Beatles (“ pays homage musically to the Beatles '” Don' t Let Me Down "").

The music breaks with the "handy song format of the previous records," Along Came a Spider is "a wonderful chunk of an album," it rocks "dark, oppressive and nasty," wrote Daniel Böhm for Rocks and wondered who had ever thought that such a rough and theatrical mixture of Killers, Welcome to My Nightmare , The Eyes of Alice Cooper and Brutal Planet could work so well.
