geography

The mountain, which rises only a little above it, is located on the Alb plateau of the Großer Heuberg about one kilometer south of Böttingen. The uppermost Lippach flows southeast of the Alten Berg in the Schäfertal, whose valley cut running to the Danube then continues as the Lippach valley from Mahlstetten. In a southerly direction, the Storchentale runs away from the mountain, which soon flows into the cut of the Birental valley to the southwest of the summit, which then continues as the Ursental valley , which extends south-southeast , all three are dry valleys. Beyond the Birental in the southwest lies the Dreifaltigkeitsberg above Spaichingen .

Nature reserve

With the ordinance of the regional council of Freiburg dated December 17, 1996, the area called Alter Berg with a total area of 45.5 hectares was designated as a nature reserve (NSG number 3.231). The area is characterized by Walcholderheiden , grasslands , hedges, stone bars, open pasture forests and with sheep pastures in the area of the hilltop.

Chapel and view

At the flat height of the mountain, at the end of a rising station path with a number of wayside shrines from a parking lot in the northeast, there is a Josefs chapel, which was inaugurated in 1919 by the Böttingen pastor Grupp. Inside it is decorated in the Beuron style. The summit offers a wide panoramic view, from there you can see the Dreifaltigkeitsberg in the southwest, the distant Black Forest in the west, the Plettenberg in the north and, in good weather, even the Alps in the south.

hike

Near the parking lot mentioned at the northeastern foot of the Old Mountain there is a sign that shows some hiking trails around Böttingen and Mahlstetten. The mountain is a station point of Donaubergland path , a 57-kilometer long predicate trail from Lviv to Beuron .

Archaeological sites

Numerous barrows have been discovered northeast of the Old Mountain . One of them (about 80 cm high and 10 m in diameter) was opened in 1948 and a male and a female skeleton were found. The skeletons lay parallel, one with the head facing the northeast and one with the head facing the southwest. An iron sword on the right and 12 clay vessels (urns, plates, bowls) on the left were documented as grave goods of the male skeleton . A 6.8 cm bronze ring, a bronze residue on the chest and a rub stone between the legs were found on the head of the female skeleton. Traces of settlement from the Hallstatt period (approx. 800 to 450 BC) were discovered around 300 m south-southeast of this grave .

There were other archaeological finds in the district of Böttingen at the idol altar in the direction of Königsheim .
