The expired Old Waldthurn Castle was the earliest settlement of the Waldthurners in Waldthurn in the Upper Palatinate district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab in Bavaria .

history

The Hohenstaufen Ministeriale Friedrich von Waldthurn began building the castle around 1213 , which was probably completed in 1215.

The first documented mention of Waldthurn comes from a copy book of the Waldsassen monastery from 1217. The old castle was located at the western end of today's Waldthurn market on a hill sloping towards Luhe . It was fortified with walls and ditches . The Waldthurn street name "Schloßgraben" still refers to the location of the castle.

In the hall book of Jörg and Hans Tobias von Waldau from 1535 there is a description of the castle :

“Walturn Castle with walls and ditches, with the new little houses in front of the bridge, including the courtyards and taverns, the stalls and cellars, which are also in the forecourt, the Maierhof below the castle, which is surrounded by its belongings. A masonry sheep hut and the sheep house, a free mill and saw mill, which are not inherited. The bath, which belonged to the community before times, a free brewery, as well as the office building, which is between the Tafern and the lower gate. "

- Quoted from Franz Bergler & Helmut Gollwitzer, 2003, p. 9.

The castle was also the seat of the Wirsbergers who followed the Waldthurners and resided here until 1647. In 1656 the castle was said to be "completely ruined and collapsed".

The next owners, the Lobkowitz family , built the New Waldthurn Castle at another location in 1666 . When the new castle was built, the old castle was demolished, and above all the gate and window frames were used for the new building. It is possible that the Wirsberg coat of arms stone, which was previously set in the garden wall, came to the New Palace. It shows the Wirsberg coat of arms at the bottom left and the Schwanberg coat of arms next to it. The text bar above shows an angel's head and the heavily weathered inscription "Georg Christoph Wirsberg". He was married to "Salome von Schwanberg " and ruled in Waldthurn between 1593 and 1623.

In 1743 only the tower of the old castle was left without a roof. The moat was filled in in the 18th century and built on in the 19th century.
