Altnauer Steg

The Altnauer bridge (in local dialect [ ɑ̞ltnɑʊ̯ɔ ʃtæɡ ]) is a built in 2010 ship jetty the community Altnau . Its length of 270 meters is unique, which makes it the longest jetty on the entire Lake Constance . Because of its length, it is sometimes called the Eiffel Tower from Lake Constance in Altnau .

Historical

Stelli

prehistory

Lake Constance has always been a traffic axis for a wide variety of goods that were transported by barge. As Eastern Switzerland was mainly engaged in textile trading , it was dependent on a functioning trade in food , mainly grain . Due to the fluctuating water level between summer and winter, a summer and a winter landing site each had to be built. A pier , the so-called "Stelli", was built near today's Altnau . With the onset of industrialization , ship trading became less relevant as the railroad was faster and easier. This also had an impact on the shipping trade on Lake Constance and winter ports were no longer loaded, which is why the Stelli was destroyed by the water over time and sank.

Dating

Stelli, which can still be seen today with the naked eye, was examined in 2012 by a diving team from the Thurgau Archeology Office . This measured the remains , had these results recorded and recovered samples for tree ring dating. The salvage made it possible to see that the Stelli was an L-shape with two legs, each 10 and 25 meters long. It consisted of spruce stakes that were attached to the bottom of the lake with the tops . Between the piles was filled with cross timbers and rubble stones and Rorschacher sandstone slabs were placed on top.

Dating on the dendrochronological level using a large spruce pole went wrong, as only 44 annual rings could be recognized on it. However, the precipitation of this, so determined, took place in autumn or winter. An exact time could not be determined, however, based on typological and historical considerations, it is assumed that the origin of the Stelli dates back to the 17th - 18th centuries.

location

The bank of the municipality of Altnau stretches along the Obersee from northwest to southeast. The Altnauer Steg is at a right angle, so it points to the northeast. Due to the elevation of the ridge of the lake , the Altnau harbor area is covered to the south and west.

The distance to the next city bordering the lake in the northwest, Kreuzlingen , is around 7.5 kilometers and to the next in the southeast, Romanshorn , around ten kilometers. To cross the lake to Hagnau on the German side of Lake Constance, at least six kilometers must be covered.

use

shipping

In contrast to other Swiss inland lakes, there is no uniform shipping company at Lake Constance, but several different shipping companies. This is due to the location of Lake Constance, because this (specifically the Obersee) is shared by the three countries Germany, Switzerland and Austria. This means that the port of Altnau is mainly served by the Schweizerische Bodenseeschifffahrtsgesellschaft (SBS), occasionally also by ships from the other two countries.

The port of Altnau is approached by the following ships in relation to the SBS:

Switzerland's fleet
Ship name society Construction year Load capacity (pers.) Length (m) Width (m) Empty weight (t)
MS Säntis SBS 1956 320 40.5 8.5 146.5
MS St. Gallen SBS 1967 650 51.2 10.5 249
MS Thurgau SBS 1932 450 49.0 9.2 228
MS Zurich SBS 1933 450 49.0 9.1 235

Ship types of the foreign companies are also of similar sizes.

In the shipping season, the Altnauer Steg is used with the Romanshorn - Immenstaad - Hagnau - Altnau - Güttingen line. On certain days, in 2018 these were Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, there are services from Altnau approximately every one and a half to two hours. A total of five courses a day come together.

leisure

For residents of the Altnau community and the surrounding area, as well as for tourists, the jetty is a good leisure offer. Provided with a bathing platform on the jetty, another to the east and several descent options, swimming in the lake is possible in the summer season. Rescue equipment for drowning people is distributed on the railing in the event of an emergency. Furthermore, undesirable at the dock of hobby regular anglers the fishing operation.

architecture

preparation

As early as 1994, a working group in the Altnau community expressed its will to build a new landing stage. The idea behind it was that the attractiveness of the community should be promoted. There is a very large campsite in Altnau , which is particularly busy at the height of summer. This season, many people in Altnau go to the lake to swim. In total, there are up to 2000 people in the vicinity of the harbor during the warmest time of the year and shipping would break new boundaries for recreational activities. In 2007 there was a vote that confirmed the construction of the jetty, in addition to the port expansion.

A positive factor in this was that, according to a study for additional shipping docks on Lake Constance - Obersee 2007, Altnau was the place between Kreuzlingen and Horn TG , which would have the least environmental impact. The shipping industry also benefited from the immediately increasing tourist attractiveness.

Conditions

At the Altnau harbor in the direction of the middle of the lake there is a flat bank that first makes it necessary to build such a long jetty. The ground was measured and evaluated by means of a sounding in 2007. The Dr. Vollenweider AG divides the ground into three layered phases:

  • Young lake deposits: Consisting of slightly clayey , relatively fine sandy silts , which are loosely stored and have a high water concentration. The layer height on the bank is between two and three meters, further away it increases up to ten meters.
  • Postglacial lake deposits : Consisting of strongly clayey silts with little fine sand , are soft to slightly resistant. The layer height on the bank is about two meters and increases up to six meters with greater distance.
  • Moraine : Consists of little clay , very silty - fine sand with a high proportion of gravel and stones .

construction

The construction of the Altnauer footbridge

The walkable area of the jetty is 398 meters above sea level and therefore around two meters higher than the summer water level. A height of 15 centimeters of concrete can be seen on the side and the maximum height is 35 centimeters. The footbridge is founded with hollow concrete piles each 35 centimeters in diameter . These are in pairs at a distance of twelve meters. While the western post is driven vertically into the ground, the eastern post has a 5º incline . The moraine , which is not too deep, is responsible for holding and fixing this .

Barriers are installed on both sides along the footbridge. The two railings vary from one another. The railing to the west is half drawn and half transparent and a handrail made of chrome steel is guided. This heavily protected side is intended on the one hand to convey security , on the other hand to prevent disturbances to aquatic animals . The eastern side, on the other hand, is only supported by wire ropes stretched lengthways and there is no handrail. There is a gap in the area of the bathing platform so that it can be freely accessed.

costs

The entire construction of the footbridge required the following things:

  • Jetty with a length of 269 meters including an adjacent bathing platform
  • Bouncing device and connecting posts
  • Entry platform and drawbridge
  • Waiting area platform
  • Waiting room
  • Development of electricity
  • Signalization, lighting and security
  • Bathing platform east

These individual costs resulted in a total of CHF 2,590,000.
