history

The origin of Ambelokipi is the settlement area Eptalofos. This was structurally developed from 1913. From 1922 to 1923 there was a significant increase in the number of inhabitants due to the influx of Greek refugees from Asia Minor, who after the Greek defeat in the Greco-Turkish War from 1919 to 1923, from 1923 onwards as part of the so-called population exchange according to the Treaty of Lausanne, their traditional settlement areas in the area of had to leave today's Turkey. Ambelokipi was first mentioned in 1926 as part of the former community Harmanköy ( Greek Χαρμάνκιοϊ Charmankioi ). In 1928 the Zoodochos Pigi church was built as the denominational center of the Ambelokipi settlement area at that time. In 1929 the municipality of Charmankioi was dissolved and Ambelokipi was integrated into the city of Thessaloniki. In 1934 the Ambelokipi municipality was split off from the city of Thessaloniki and an independent municipal administration was established ( Greek κοινότητα ). The settlement areas Eptalofos-Kaistrio Pedio and Margariti were part of this newly founded municipality. The population of these settlement areas was 4,000 in 1932. On October 6, 1954, Ambelokipi was upgraded from a municipality to a city ( Greek Δήμος ) by order of the King of Greece (roughly comparable to the granting of city rights in Germany). This municipality was merged with the neighboring Menemeni in 2010 , whereby the two municipalities continue to exist as municipal districts. The seat of the new community is in Ambelokipi.

On February 10, 2017, a 250 kg bomb from the Second World War was found during construction work on a gas station. The detonator could be removed and the bomb recovered on the third day following. For this, an area with a radius of 1900 m was evacuated by around 70,000 people , the largest number ever for such a purpose in Greece.
