Amir Khalil

Amir Khalil (born November 21, 1964 in al-Fayyūm ) is an Egyptian veterinarian and project manager at the international animal welfare organization Four Paws .

Youth and education

Khalil was born on November 21, 1964 in al-Fayyūm, the son of a pharmacist and a housewife. He has lived in Vienna since 1989 and is the father of three daughters. Khalil speaks a total of six languages, including Coptic . After studying veterinary medicine at Cairo University , Khalil received a scholarship to study wildlife ecology in Pretoria , South Africa . At the age of 25, he received a scholarship at the University of Edinburgh , but decided to work with the animal welfare organization Four Paws .

Act

In 1994, Amir Khalil started volunteering for Four Paws to reduce the stray population in Romania . In 1997 he became a project manager and head of the Disaster Relief Unit. In 2014 he carried out four rescue missions in the Gaza Strip and evacuated the Al Bisan Zoo and Khan Younis Zoo in 2016 and the Rafah Zoo in 2019.

In April 2017, he evacuated the last two surviving bears and lions from the Montazah Al Morour Zoo in Mosul , Iraq . In July 2017, he rescued 13 animals from the abandoned Magic World amusement park near Aleppo , Syria . Amir Khalil also provided assistance to animals in the Libyan Tripoli Zoo in 2011 , in Cairo during the Arab Spring (2011) and in the Iraqi Baghdad Zoo in 2003.

Amir Khalil has set up animal shelters in Bulgaria , Jordan , Myanmar , South Africa and the Ukraine and led the rescue of 27 dancing bears in the Balkan Peninsula . In 2001 he founded the Belitsa dancing bear park with the support of the Brigitte Bardot Foundation . In 2006 he founded the Lionsrock Big Cat Sanctuary in Bethlehem , South Africa. Together with the Princess Alia Foundation, he founded the Al Ma'wa Sanctuary for Nature and Wildlife . In 2018 he founded Elephants Lake, a 17,000 hectare reserve and rehabilitation center for former working elephants in Myanmar's Bago region .

Amir Khalil has provided disaster relief for animals in need in the Balkan floods in 2014, Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines (2013), the flood disaster in Pakistan in 2010 , the hunger crisis in Kenya in 2006 and the tsunami in Sri Lanka in 2004 . In January 2020, Amir Khalil and Four Paws rescued sick lions from a zoo in Khartoum after the condition of the animals had caused criticism worldwide.

Amir Khalil takes part in Ai Weiwei's documentary Human Flow (2017) and is featured in the non-fiction books Father of Lions: How One Man Defied Isis and Saved Mosul Zoo (2019) by Louise Callaghan, Paarden viegen business class by Olaf Koens (2019), Dancing Bears : True Stories of People Nostalgic for Life Under Tyranny by Witold Szablowski (2014).
