Amity is a city in Allegany County , New York , United States . During the 2010 census , the city had 2,308 residents. The name Amity means friendship.

The Town of Amity is located in the center of Allegany County, northeast of Olean .

history

The city was founded in 1830 from parts of the Town of Angelica and the Town of Scio . The first white settlers had already settled in the area in 1804.

The city has a total area of ​​89.5 km 2 , of which 89.2 km 2 is land and 0.3 km 2 (or 0.23%) is water.

The Southern Tier Expressway ( New York State Route 17 / Interstate 86 ) runs through the northwest corner of the town, north past Belvedere. New York State Route 19 and New York State Route 244 intersect at Belmont. The Genesee River flows north through Amity. Also in Amity are:

  • Amity Lake - a small lake on the eastern city limits
  • Belmont - the Village is in the center of Amity and is County Seat
  • Belvidere - a hamlet in the northwest part of the city on State Route 19 (Willets Avenue). The local Christ Episcopal Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
  • Withey - Hamlet in the northeast corner of the town on State Route 244 (Mainville Road).
  • Plum Bottom Creek - a creek that runs through the Town of Amity

The population in Amity consisted of 97.68% of White , 0.76% Black or African American , 0.04% Native American , 0.09% Asian , 0% Pacific Islander , 0.09% said other races to belong and 1.34% named two or more races. 0.76% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The residents of Amity were distributed to 885 households out of which 30.6% had children under 18 years of age. 52.5% of households were married, 11.3% had a female head of household without a husband, and 32.0% were not families. 26.6% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 12.8% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.98.

The population was divided into 25.6% minors, 7.3% 18–24 year olds, 26.5% 25–44 year olds, 24.1% 45–64 year olds and 16.4% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 women there were 100.6 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 95.8 men.

The city became famous for the film Jaws . In fact, Amity, New York is not on the coast. The island Amity Island shown in the film is purely fictional, the shooting took place on Martha's Vineyard .
