Anderson Silva (* 14. April 1975 in São Paulo full name Anderson da Silva ) is a Brazilian MMA fighter and former UFC -Mittelgewichtschampion. He holds the UFC records for most consecutive wins as well as most premature wins, making him one of the best MMA fighters of all time.

Career

Silva is proficient in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu , Capoeira , Judo and Muay Thai . He began his MMA competition career in 1997 and completed shooto matches in Japan , among other things . He then switched to the Japanese organizer Pride FC . After further fighting in smaller leagues, Anderson Silva denied his first fight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship in June 2006 , in which Chris Leben went KO in the first round. In October 2006, he defeated Rich Franklin also in the first round by knockout and was UFC middleweight champion . In February 2007 he was supposed to defend his title for the first time, but because his opponent Travis Lutter could not keep the weight limit for the middleweight division, the encounter was not classified as a title fight. In the second round, Lutter tapped because Silva could land a number of elbows in the triangle choke.

In July 2007, he defended his UFC 73 title against Nate Marquardt by beating him in the first round by technical knockout. This was followed by a rematch against Rich Franklin in October 2007, which Silva was able to win again in a dominant way by knocking out. In March 2008, he defeated the Pride middleweight champion Dan Henderson .

In July 2008, Silva completed his first light heavyweight fight. After less than a minute he was able to knock out James Irvin . After the excursion into the higher weight class, he defended his UFC middleweight title in October 2008 against Patrick Côté . Côté injured his leg in the third round and could not continue fighting. In April 2009, Silva went into the cage to defend his title against Thales Leites and was declared the winner by the judges after five rounds. Silva moved again in August 2009 for a fight in the light heavyweight division, where he met the former UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin . Silva showed his opponent standing by fighting over long distances without any cover and finally knocking Griffin out after almost three minutes. He then had to undergo an operation on his elbow, which is why a UFC middleweight title fight against Vitor Belfort had to be canceled.

Instead, Silva fought Demian Maia at UFC 112 in April 2010. Once again the title holder was dominant and demonstrated his superiority in the standing fight in the first two rounds. In the following three rounds, Silva lowered the pace and at the end was even warned by the referee for lack of activity. After five rounds, the judges unanimously declared Silva the winner.

In August 2010 Silva defended his title against Chael Sonnen . The challenger presented himself loudly in the run-up and was very disrespectful to Silva. Contrary to all expectations, Sonnen was able to dominate the champion for long stretches of the fight by repeatedly bringing him to the ground and punching him there. Almost two minutes before the end of the very one-sided fight, Silva was able to set a triangle choke and force Sonnen to give up. In the fight against Sonnen, Silva took more hits than in his eleven previous UFC fights combined. As it turned out later, Silva went into battle injured and Sonnen doped.

In February 2011, Silva met Vitor Belfort . After a short sampling phase, Silva landed a precise front kick that immediately knocked Belfort out. Also Yushin Okami prepared Silva in August 2011, no problems and went in the second round TKO. Silva was able to make up for his disqualification defeat against Okami in 2006.

On July 7th, Silva faced Chael Sonnen again. This fight was advertised as the most anticipated rematch of all time. Silva won the fight by TKO in the second round and broke his own record of nine consecutive title defenses.

Since the program of UFC 153 was on the brink due to injuries of some fighters, Silva decided at short notice for another fight in the light heavyweight division. Against Stephan Bonnar , Silva was able to prove his superiority while standing. He effortlessly knocked Bonnar down on one knee in the first round, dropped a hail of blows on his opponent and was the first fighter to defeat Bonnar prematurely.

On July 6, 2013, he lost his title to Chris Weidman by knockout in the second round at UFC 162 . At UFC 168 on December 28, 2013, a rematch between Silva and Weidman was scheduled. Silva lost this fight again because he broke his shin and fibula during the second round.

On January 31, 2015, Anderson Silva made his comeback after the injury break in the fight against Nick Diaz at UFC 183. Silva won the fight after five rounds by unanimous judge decision, but became positive on the consumption of both before and after the fight anabolic steroids tested. The victory was then withdrawn from Silva because of doping and he was banned for a year. In 2016, the now 41-year-old Silva competed against the Englishman Michael Bisping and surprisingly lost on points. He was equally unsuccessful against Daniel Cormier before defeating Derek Brunson in his last fight in 2017 by an unanimous decision.

Silva faced the American Jared Cannonier at UFC 237 on May 11, 2019. He lost the fight via TKO in the first round after a kick from Connonier against the inside of Silva's right leg injured the Brazilian and he could no longer fight.
