André Köhler (born February 28, 1965 in Klingenthal ) is a former German soccer player. During his career he acted in the GDR league for Wismut Aue and in the Bundesliga at Eintracht Frankfurt .

Athletic career

From skiing to football

André Köhler began his sporting career at SC Dynamo Klingenthal as a ski jumper and skier. At the age of eight, however, he switched to the football section, which, unlike winter sports enthusiasts, was not a sports club worth promoting . After completing his school education, he completed an apprenticeship as a toolmaker. In November 1983 he was drafted for an 18-month military service with the NVA and during this time he played football for the lower-class army sports community Vorwärts Erfurt. After his discharge from the army, the 1.85 meter tall Köhler joined the second-rate GDR league club BSG Chemie Böhlen , where he completed the 1985/86 and 1986/87 seasons and became the team's top performer.

Bismuth floodplain

For the 1987/88 season Köhler moved to the upper division Wismut Aue . He overcame the class difference without difficulty, became a regular player and played 25 of the 26 point games in his first league season, mainly as a pre-stopper . He was thus significantly involved in 4th place in the Auer, the best placement in years, and then played all four games in the European Cup. When Ulrich Schulze, a new coach, took over the team for the 1988/89 season , Köhler was deployed more variably, but usually continued to play in defense. Due to his temporary role in midfield, he scored five goals in his 22 game appearances.

On July 12, 1989 Köhler used the Intertotocup game Örgryte IS - Wismut Aue together with his teammates Jens König and Thomas Weiß to flee to the Federal Republic. There he was signed by the Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt, but at the request of the GDR Football Association, FIFA imposed a one-year ban for illegally changing clubs. After the closure and the fall of the Berlin Wall , Köhler returned to Wismut Aue. The team was relegated to the second division in the preseason, where Köhler played 16 point games in the 1990/91 season and scored three goals. It was his last season in Aue , within three seasons he had played 80 competitive games and scored twelve goals. In the major league he was used in 47 games, where he scored seven goals.

Eintracht Frankfurt, Fortuna Cologne

In the summer of 1991 Köhler returned to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga. There he could not prevail and was only used four times for a total of 66 minutes between the 8th and 15th matchday. In November 1991 he moved to SC Fortuna Köln in the 2nd Bundesliga . There he was used from the 19th to the last 32nd game day in 14 matches as a defender. In the 1992/93 season, coach Gerd Roggensack Köhler placed in midfield, where he played 45 of the 46 second division games. Köhler played his last professional season in 1993/94. From the 1st to the 17th match day on November 20, 1993 he completed 13 more games for Fortuna in the 2nd Bundesliga, after which persistent knee problems forced him to end his career. For Fortuna Köln, he had played 72 point games during his three seasons without scoring his own.

coach

Then Köhler returned to his native Vogtland , where he worked from 1999 to 2006 for Merkur Oelsnitz in the Chemnitz district class (7th league) as a football coach. After a three-year break, Köhler settled in Franconia , began to work as a driving instructor and took over the training of ATSV Münchberg / Schlegel in the Hof / Marktredwitz district league (10th league) for the 2009/10 season.

In October 2011, Köhler returned to Merkur Oelsnitz as head coach. The first team resigned there after two promotions up to the Landesliga Sachsen at the beginning of October including their coach Michael Hiemisch and followed their main sponsor. Three weeks later, the majority of the players said they wanted to continue playing for the financially troubled club at least until the winter break. After relegation in summer 2012, Köhler continued his coaching activity at Merkur Oelsnitz in the Saxon District League West. In June 2013, when Oelsnitz had managed to stay in the league after a sensational second half of the season, Köhler asked the board for a break and ended his coaching time for the time being. In March 2014, he was introduced as the new coach of the relegation-threatened Upper Franconian national division club FC Trogen.
