Andrea Ballerin (born February 1, 1989 ) is an Italian ski racer . His favorite disciplines are slalom and giant slalom.

Career

Ballerin, who lives in Trento , made his international debut at the age of 15 at FIS races in Chapelco, Argentina, in August 2004. Back in Europe, he started in junior races in December of the same year. He specialized in slalom and giant slalom at an early stage and achieved several top 10 placements. Ballerin remained in the junior division in the following winters and was able to celebrate his first podium place in Abetone in February 2006 . On February 12, 2006, he won the Pinzolo race . In September 2006 the now 17 year old made his debut in the Alpine South American Cup in Chile . In the first slalom race at Termas de Chillán , he finished third on the podium. Ballerin again spent the winter of 2006/07 in lower-class FIS races and junior races in his home country of Italy.

In September 2007 Ballerin was used again in the South American Cup and, as in the previous year, started again in the Downhill and Super-G. However, he could only convince with a 10th place in the slalom. In March 2008 he started at the Italian Championships with the seniors for the first time, but had no chance and ended up only in the back field. So he remained in the development and perspective squad.

It was not until January 2010 that the European Cup followed. However, he did not finish the race in Kirchberg after being eliminated in the first run. On February 9, 2010, Ballerin collected European Cup points for the first time with a 26th place in Méribel . However, they remained the only ones in winter. Only a year later did he achieve a top result in this series for the first time in ninth place in Zuoz. He was then nominated for the World Cup in Schladming on January 25, 2011 , but was eliminated in round one. In the following two years he continued to compete in the lower class and rarely in the European Cup, but without any notable successes. He also remained without a medal at the Italian Championships.

In February 2013 there was a new nomination for the World Cup in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , but Ballerin missed the qualification there. He succeeded a little later in Kranjska Gora , but was eliminated again in the first round. At the German Alpine Ski Championships 2013 he was third in the giant slalom. At the Slovenian Championships in Krvavec in April, he finished second in the giant slalom. In August, Ballerin started the Alpine Australia New Zealand Cup on Coronet Peak in New Zealand for the first time . At the New Zealand Championship that followed a few days later in the same place, he was 24th in the giant slalom. For the winter of 2013/14 he was again given a starting place in the European Cup, but remained in the first races without any chance of top positions, usually he was eliminated in the first round. It was not until the City Event in San Vigilio that he surprisingly convinced in fourth place.

A year later he was given the opportunity to take part in a World Cup again in Schladming, but failed again in qualifying. In March in Kranjska Gora , too , he clearly missed the competition. At the Italian Championships in 2015 he was seventh in slalom and eleventh in giant slalom. At the Slovenian Championships in Kranjska Gora, Ballerin was eliminated in both competitions in the second round.

On October 29, 2015, Ballerin won his first World Cup points as 19th at the Giant Slalom World Cup in Sölden . A month later he won the slalom race in the Alpine Nor-Am Cup in Jackson . In December and January of the 2015/16 season, Ballerin started several times in the World Cup, but missed the qualification or was eliminated in the first round. It was not until February 2016 that he was the 25th to win more points in Japan. In the period that followed, Ballerin chased the top field and was able to return to the points in Levi at the beginning of the 2016/17 season . It remained the only World Cup of the season in which Ballerin even reached the second round. In March 2017 he started in the Alpine Far East Cup for the first time . The best result was a fourth place in the giant slalom. On March 26, 2017, he won silver at the Italian Championships.

A year later, Ballerin celebrated two top 10 placements in the European Cup in St. Moritz . In March he was third on the European Cup podium for the first time in Andorra. The European Cup race in Andalo in December went even better , when he finished second. In January 2019 he finished on the podium again in Courchevel . On February 28, 2019, he finally won the giant slalom on the Oberjoch . He finished sixth at the 2019 Italian Giant Slalom Championships. For the season 2019/20 Ballerin for the B-team was nominated.
