Andreas Life (2016)

Andreas (Andrej) Leben (born July 9, 1966 in Bleiburg / Pliberk , Austria ) is an Austrian literary and cultural scientist and translator who teaches and researches at the Institute for Slavic Studies at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz . He is a member of the ethnic group of the Carinthian Slovenes .

Life

Leben attended grammar school in Völkermarkt , where he graduated in 1985. He then studied Slavic Studies ( Slovenian and Serbo-Croatian ) and European Ethnology at the University of Vienna , and spent an exchange year at the University of Ljubljana . In 1991 he graduated with a thesis on contemporary Slovenian literature in Carinthia . He then began, also in Vienna, a doctoral degree in Slavic studies, in which he dealt with the Slovenian and Czech short prose of modernity , which is why he spent a study visit to the Charles University in Prague . He graduated in 1995. From 1998, Leben was a lecturer in Slovene and Czech literature at the Institute for Slavonic Studies at the University of Vienna, and in 2004 he took up a position as a university assistant . In 2010 he was appointed to the University of Graz, where he has held a professorship for Slovene literary and cultural studies ever since.

Main focus of work and research

One of his main research areas is the literature and culture of the Slovenian minority in Austria . In 2000/2001 he worked on the FWF project The Slovenian Theater Scene in Carinthia since 1976 at the Institute for General and Comparative Literature at the Alpen-Adria University in Klagenfurt . From 2002 to 2004 he was involved in the JF project of the Austrian National Library Literature and Resistance - the resistance in literature , in which he dealt with partisan literature in Carinthia. In an advisory capacity, he was also involved in the development of the s Encyclopedia of the Language and Literature of the Carinthian Slovenes project. Since March 2016 he has been the project manager of the FWF project Bilingual literary practice of the Carinthian Slovenes after 1991 .

Other focal points of his work are autobiography research (including the opus by Lojze Kovačič ) and contemporary Slovene literature.

In addition to his research and teaching activities, Leben also works as a translator of Slovenian literature into German. His focus is on LBGT literature; he translated several works by Brane Mozetič and Suzana Tratnik . In 2006, together with Erwin Köstler, he published a bibliography of book translations of Slovenian literature into German. In the summer of 2016 he led the summer school for literary translation on the island of Premuda for the first time together with Urška P. Černe .
