Die Killerpilze are a German rock band that has existed since 2002.

Band history

2002 to 2005: Before her commercial breakthrough

The band was founded in October 2002 in Dillingen an der Donau by four students. Johannes Halbig ( vocals , born July 30, 1989, from Dillingen an der Donau) and Andreas Schlagenhaft ( bass , born September 9, 1988, from Zusamaltheim ) laid the foundation for this band. Maximilian Schlichter ( guitar , born July 3, 1988, from Emersacker ) and Johannes' brother Fabian Halbig ( drums , born December 23, 1992, from Dillingen an der Donau) completed the line-up.

The four musicians received start-up help from a long-time musician friend who taught them writing and composing. While they became known exclusively with German songs from 2006, they also wrote a large number of English song texts in their first years. The music of the first years can be classified in the genre of pop-rock with pop-punk influences. In addition to songs such as Anti Racism, the songs from that time mostly dealt with topics from everyday life.

The band made their first appearance on February 14, 2003 in Chili in Dillingen as the opening act. Over the next two months she expanded her program and secured a loyal live audience in her Swabian homeland (over 70 concerts from the beginning of 2003 to the end of 2005). They have been awarded various prizes for young talent, including the Top Act 2005 and the “Band of the Year” award in January 2006, in which they prevailed against around 40 bands from all over Swabia.

The killer mushrooms produced in that time their first album from the front by the punk Avenue (publication 7 July 2004), which was taken up in a children's room and is rather poor sound quality, and sold it on their live concerts as well as by ordering online through their website. Some songs from this album were released in new versions on B-sides of later singles.

2005 to 2009: The killer mushrooms at Universal

In 2005 the recordings for the band's first studio album were made. The producer was Corni Bartels. At that time, the killer mushrooms were signed to Universal Music .

They became known nationwide in the spring of 2006 with their debut single Richtig scheiße (in a nice way) . In the months that followed, the band released their album Invasion der Killerpilze , which has since sold over 140,000 times and received a gold award, as well as other singles and went on tour throughout Germany. Her publications during this time and her further existence were accompanied by media such as Bravo and VIVA . By these the band was marketed as a punk counterpart to Tokio Hotel , which guaranteed welcome cover stories for the media. The band, on the other hand, distanced themselves from any comparisons.

At the time of their commercial breakthrough, none of the band members was older than 17 years, the drummer Fabi was only 13. In March 2007, the bassist Andreas Schlagenhaft left the band. The official justification for this was that he now had more time to finish school.

On July 27, 2007, the second album Mit Pauken und Raketen was released . In advance of the beginning of July the single liebmichhassmich was released, which reached position 19 in the German charts. Apart from the single, the sound was no longer as pop-punk-influenced as in previous songs. For the first time instruments such as trumpet or piano were used. The second album couldn't keep up with the sales of the first CD and only sold about 40,000 times.

2009 to 2012: The killer mushrooms on their own two feet

This was followed by the separation from Universal Music , as there were disagreements with the band. The band then founded their own record label killerpilzerecords , through which they released their third studio album, Lautonom , on March 19, 2010 after the preliminary single Drei , which the TV station RTL II used as a song for their promotional trailer . Like its two predecessors, this record was also recorded by producer Corni Bartels in the Munich space studios and is considered a “liberation” for the band, as they were now able to work completely independently for the first time.

After more than 60 concerts in 2010, the band's fourth album was announced in January 2011 for March 11, 2011. The single "Komm komm.com", released a month earlier, was the forerunner of the new album. For the first time, the CD was produced entirely by the Killerpilzen itself. A European tour in Germany , Austria , France and Turkey took place in spring 2011. In the summer of 2011, the Killerpilze presented their current album at various festivals (including the Open Flair ).

2012/2013: Grell

In addition to another European tour (including the band played concerts in Germany, Austria and Greece) and many festival appearances, the Killerpilze recorded their next album Grell in 2012 , which was released on March 1, 2013 on their label killerpilzerecords . The band described Grell as a "farewell formula to the youth and a dive into the unknown". The album was produced by the guitarist Maximilian Schlichter. The band was supported in songwriting by the rapper Curse . The band released first samples of the new CD on various social media channels. The first single, "Take me with you", including a video she produced herself, went straight to number 1 on the Myvideo charts. Rapper Curse wrote on his Facebook page: "It's the thoroughly honest, angular-and-edged, craggy, starkly emotional, little fucking rough diamond masterpiece of a young, horny band that does its thing and loves good music and celebrating good lyrics and damn it just got everything right. And from here it can go anywhere. " Rolling Stone reviews the album with "rocks down to earth and good like the young The Clash ".

This is followed by appearances at the largest German festival Rock am Ring 2013, the largest indie festival in Austria Frequency on the main stage and at the Nova Rock Festival they set the audience record on the Red Bull fire truck stage. Over the summer the band played other festivals and in autumn the second part of the Grell tour through Germany and Austria followed.

On September 6, 2013 the album Grell was released in the deluxe version with some bonus tracks. In keeping with this, the band has a big campaign with Spotify Germany, where they released an exclusive song Perfect . In November the band will be a guest on the big German prime-time show Circus Halligalli on ProSieben . An internet storm then developed, culminating in the fact that the word "killerpilze" was the most widely written term on German Twitter when it was broadcast on November 18, 2013 . On December 21, 2013, after a tour of almost 70 concerts, the band played the year-end concert "The city still sounds like us" in Munich and celebrated the end of the Grell tour.

2014: Biggest crowdfunding in German music history

For the beginning of 2014 the band had announced that they would return to the rehearsal room and the studio to work on the successor to Grell . The homepage said: "(...) We are back in the rehearsal room and studio. The next Killerpilze album is coming in 2014 !!"

The Killerpilze also supported the Austrian rock band 3 Feet Smaller on their complete tour of Austria in January / February. The band then toured in Russia. On February 1st, the Killerpilze started the crowdfunding campaign "To the KP of good hope" via Startnext . On June 5th, 2014 the band released their free "Postkarten EP", which was downloaded over 10,000 times in a few days. In the summer of 2014, the band also supported bands like Madsen and Jennifer Rostock as opening act. For the postcard EP the singer Jo Halbig worked with Sebastian Madsen on some lyrics.

2016: The killer mushrooms with HIGH back in the charts

At the end of 2015 it was announced that their latest album High will be released on March 8, 2016, which was produced by Henning Sommer (including Wilhelm Tell Me) in Hamburg. The album was the band's first album in five years to hit the charts again, laying the foundation for a successful year for the band. The album received positive reviews from critics and fans alike and received consistently good reviews. The online music magazine Tonspion rated the album with 5 out of 6 stars and wrote about High: “... appears mature and grounded.” The music blog “... the album is reminiscent of indie pop heyday and doesn't have to be international Hide large-scale productions. "The Pick music magazine also confirmed:" High could hardly sound more international. "

The band played 80 concerts in Germany, Austria and France in the course of 2016 and announced on October 15, 2016 that they wanted to release a film in 2017 for which they want to collect money again with the help of crowdfunding. The band and their fans repeatedly managed to exceed the set target and cracked EUR 47,000 at Startnext. For the video for the single “SchneeSonneSchnee” the band flew to Canada and Tierra del Fuego Argentina to capture scenes similar to those from the movie “ The Revenant ” with Leonardo Di Caprio.

2017: 15 years of Killerpilze - STILL YOUNG - The movie

In 2017 the band celebrates its 15th anniversary. As it became known at the end of 2016, the band is working on a movie "IMMER STILL YOUNG - 15 years KILLER PILZE", which will be released in the largest cinema chains across Germany on October 5th. The film is being awarded by the Munich agency “24 Bilder”, while the film was produced by Nordpolaris. Directed by David Schlichter, the brother of the guitarist Maximilian Schlichter, and Fabian Halbig. On June 28, 2017, the film won the renowned audience award from the Süddeutsche Zeitung and Bayern 2 at the 35th Munich Film Festival. The film trailer also features other protagonists such as Klaas Heufer-Umlauf, Jennifer Weist (Jennifer Rostock), Felix Brummer (Kraftklub), Sebastian Madsen (Madsen), rapper Curse and others. v. m. to see. The first preliminary reviews are all very positive. The Süddeutsche Zeitung writes: "... a classic of the music film epic: a heroic story of rise, fall and comeback". The radio station Bayern 2 reviews: “Atmospheric and rousing documentary film!” In the festival blog, the film is described as follows: “Rousing music film in which you also learn a lot about the mechanisms of the music business.” The large German music portal laut.de reviews the film with “an enrichment for the German music document landscape. Absolutely worth seeing, especially for non-fans "

"STILL YOUNG - 15 Years of Killerpilze" is the first German music documentary to be published in such large cinema chains. From September 21st to October 9th the band was on a big cinema tour in 30 German cities.

The film "STILL YOUNG - 15 Years of Killer Mushrooms" was released on December 15, 2017 on DVD & Blu-Ray and Video On Demand platforms such as Amazon Prime. Studio Hamburg Enterprises is responsible for the distribution of the film.
