Circus HalliGalli (short CHG or HalliGalli ) was a late night show that was broadcast on ProSieben from February 25, 2013 to June 20, 2017 . It was moderated by Joko Winterscheidt and Klaas Heufer-Umlauf , better known as the duo Joko and Klaas . The concept of the show was essentially based on that of MTV Home and neoParadise . The show was produced live on tape . Exceptions are the first episode of the eighth season on August 29, 2016 and the first and the fourteenth episode of the ninth season on February 14 and May 30, 2017, which were broadcast live.

On February 13, 2017, Winterscheidt and Heufer-Umlauf announced that the show would end in June with the last episode of the ninth season.

The show won prestigious awards such as the Rose d'Or , the Grimme Prize or the Echo and was nominated for numerous other prizes. According to Klaas Heufer-Umlauf's own statement, the show is “festively staged trash ” and “substantial nonsense”.

Structure of the program

The structure of the program corresponded roughly to that of the previous programs MTV Home (2009–2011) and especially neoParadise (2011–2013). The characters Palina Rojinski , Olli Schulz and Grandma Violetta (until 2015) known from neoParadise were represented as sidekicks . Regular guests in the studio and in feature films included Udo Walz , Jared Hasselhoff and Matthias Schweighöfer .

The show usually started with a short stand-up appearance by both presenters. As a running gag , Winterscheidt always welcomed viewers to the second best show in the world . This was followed by different clips from different - in some cases also recurring - categories (see below) or games with guests or the audience. An interview with a prominent guest was usually planned towards the middle of the broadcast. Fixed elements were also the appearances of the band from the phone booth , a mostly less well-known band that initiated the commercial breaks (in a similar form also with MTV Home as a house band and with neoParadise as a closet band ) and the music performance of another band on the show stage; the latter took place until the middle of the seventh season at the end of the show, then in the middle of the show. From the eighth season, the timing of the stage band varied.

In the first four seasons, Grandma Violetta was on duty on every show and was therefore responsible for greeting the guests and bringing the musicians back to the phone booth. At the beginning of the 5th season she got out and Joko and Klaas alternated weekly "Büdchen" duty. Every week someone else sat at the foot of the stairs to receive guests. From season 6, cleaning lady Sabine took over the role.

In seasons one to six, a countdown began shortly after the start of each broadcast, which initiated a surprise. These were actions that were staged by the show's team and that Joko and Klaas mostly knew nothing about. This so-called countdown moment was only omitted twice (episode 4 of the first season and episode 7 of the second season). At the beginning of season seven, the countdown moment was replaced by the “HalliGalli halftime show”, in which people from the audience compete in a mini-game for 10,000 euros. After four editions, the halftime show with a winner was discontinued. Since then, there has been no more interruption in the show (the exception was episode 100, in which there was again a countdown moment on the occasion of the anniversary, issue 107 for the award of a Golden Umberto as well as issue 113, 120, 121 and among other issues 136).

With the beginning of the eighth season, the on-air design was changed. The unconventional central positioning of the new program logo at the lower edge of the picture, which, in the form of a triangular sign, only contained the initials of the show, stood out in particular . In the studio itself, however, the classic lettering could still be seen throughout. In addition, the picture-in-picture principle was used for the first time , for example to show reactions of the people concerned to a contribution.

Interviews

As in the previous formats, one or two prominent guests were invited to each program and interviewed. Usually, Joko and Klaas interviewed the guest on the couch. Interviews were also carried out at irregular intervals in different forms:

• Interview in the cellar / In the box : Some guests were interviewed in a fictional cellar. These interviews were recorded before the show. The rubric was already available in a similar form on MTV Home as an interview in a box and on neoParadise as an interview in a closet .
• The unnecessarily complicated interview : Some guests were interviewed in this section under conditions that made the conversation unnecessarily complicated. This could be done live in the studio or shown as a single player.
• A beat please / a song please / Straight Outta HalliGalli : Joko and Klaas interviewed the guest rapping and singing on changing beats of different pieces of music. The guest had to answer in the same way.
• The unnecessarily varied interview : Joko and Klaas asked the guests questions in alternating, given emotions, which they had to answer in a different, also given emotion.
• Sabine does learning English : cleaning lady Sabine interviewed English-speaking celebrities, although she does not speak the language.
• A serious man asks serious things : Evil Jared Hasselhoff tried his hand at being a serious interviewer, which always ended up with vomiting.
• Günther Jauch 2 : In this section, Grandma Violetta interviewed a guest. This category was already available at neoParadise when Violetta wants to know .

Actions performed irregularly

• Rojinski File : In this category, Palina had to do unpleasant tasks, ostensibly to be able to get out of her contract. This rubric existed in a similar form on MTV Home as 99 things a man should have done in his life .
• Endurance : The aim here was to endure things as long as possible. Those who could no longer endure what was demanded lost. This category was already available on MTV Home under the same name and on neoParadise as Bis eine Howult .
• When Udo called : Here Joko, Klaas and the hairdresser Udo Walz (and other celebrities in the period that followed) exchanged their cell phones and called prominent people from the cell phone's contact list. The aim was to spend as long as possible on the owner of the cell phone.
• Charles Schulzkowski : Olli Schulz tried as Charles Schulzkowski to improve the world by drinking "a Lütten" (whiskey) with people. This category already existed at neoParadise .
• The duel for the money : In this quiz show, the candidates are asked guessing questions that they have to answer covertly, after which further clues are gradually revealed, whereby the candidates can bet money or fold in every round, similar to the model of Stefan Raab's TV total poker night . In addition to Joko and Klaas, there are four prominent candidates. The quiz will be moderated by Oliver Kalkofe , with Micky Beisenherz as a live commentator . So far, the game has been staged twice as part of a special broadcast of several hours by Circus HalliGalli, and since the third episode it has been broadcast as a separate program after Circus Halligalli or on its slot. The theme music is the song Frontier Psychiatrist by The Avalanches . The candidates were:

• Dawn of the Gag : Palina presented Joko and Klaas and a guest with funny videos or live performances that they couldn't laugh at. If they did, they had to drink a schnapps.
• Dias you can explain : Two teams described strange pictures to each other. The other team had to guess whether a real picture was being described or the descriptions were just made up.
• Those who said yes : In this action, the task was to answer 'yes' to every question that was asked for eight hours and then carry out the actions. This was played at the Cologne Carnival and in Berlin.
• Golden Umberto : An award given for various achievements, such as a lack of acting talent or bizarre appearances.
  • For the first time, the soccer player Kevin Großkreutz was awarded this prize for his poor acting performance in a commercial . When Großkreutz did not respond to several invitations, the two intercepted him before the last Champions League group game at the airport and presented him with the award after Joko had failed to enter the training grounds disguised as Jürgen Klopp .
  • In mid-2014 two more Golden Umbertos were awarded. The winners were Die Busfahrer with their bus driver song for social engagement and the Berliner U-Bahn-Ficker for anti - social engagement .
  • On December 15, 2014, the Golden Umberto was awarded in a special broadcast in the five categories Comedy , Runs with you , Golden Schlauberto , Golden Mummberto for amazing views and Golden Umberto for life's work . Prize winners were (in order) Daniel Aminati , “I daut it-Typ” Magnus Resch, viewers Sebastian Koch, Money Boy and Die Kassierer .
  • Also in the 6th season, a Golden Umberto was awarded at the end of 2015, this time for the Fürstenwald water park “ Schwapp ” because of a promotional video on its website.
  • In issue 107 of September 5, 2016, a candidate from the show The Best Show in the World (Show Hart but Unfair from episode 2) received a Golden Umberto for "correct behavior" after he abused the trust of his opponent during a game on the show to receive an amount of money for yourself.
  • In March 2017, the Golden Camera team also received a Golden Umberto. Those responsible from the Funke media group had previously requested the return of a stolen golden camera . The HalliGalli team complied with the request, but also sent the Golden Umberto.
• Goodnight Show : Joko usually visited a shared apartment late at night, where one resident had to perform four tasks while another roommate was not allowed to wake up.
• In Vino Veritas : In this section, Klaas asked party-goers political questions early in the morning. This category already existed at neoParadise .
• My best enemy : In this section the friendship between two candidates was put to the test. The candidate who applied received a prize if his friend solved a task that cost him a great deal of effort. From December 6, 2014, this became a separate Saturday evening show.
• Oh (r) you happy ones : Joko and Klaas visited a Christmas market together with Matthias Schweighöfer and set tasks for themselves with a button in their ear.
• Oliver Stark : As Oliver Stark, Olli Schulz gave tips for a better life.
• Pocahontas : Grandma Violetta, disguised as Pocahontas, answered questions from children.
• Alcohol and cons : Klaas organized a talk show with drunk teenagers .
• Trip to Vulgaria : The guests stood together with Joko and Klaas in a circle and each had to shout an insult that began with the last letter of the previous insult. Who couldn't think of any more, dropped out.
• Sabine does sings… : Cleaning lady Sabine tried to sing along with English-language songs, which she heard on her headphones, although she could not speak the language. The song then had to be guessed.
• Sleep 'n' Greet : In this section, Joko and a celebrity visited a sleeping person at night who did not know anything about the action before and then celebrated with her. This category already existed in a similar form on MTV Home under the name “Viewer Scribes”, with the difference that there was no prominent guest involved.
• The Longest Day : Joko and Klaas planned the "worst day of their lives" for each other. When the day was over, the task was done and the other was allowed to plan the coming Longest Day.
• If I were you : Joko and Klaas “swapped” their personalities and had to take turns doing whatever the other said. The aim was to make the task so that the other refused to do it, which led to defeat. One variant was the spontaneous-if-I-were-you, in which Joko or Klaas surprised each other with a task. This section was already available on MTV Home under the same name and on neoParadise as if I were you .

Reviews

The pilot episode was received differently in the media. Arno Frank from Spiegel Online described them as "trying" and "tired" . Of the “exactly two successful jokes on this show” , one was made by Oliver Pocher and the other by Wolfgang Lippert , while Winterscheidt and Heufer-Umlauf did “actually nothing” . Karin Janker described the show on Sueddeutsche.de as a “ cheap copy of the previous show” , but due to the “corset of clips, studio talk, commercial break and musician appearances [...] there was hardly any room for the often witty verbal battles between Joko and Klaas, as you can still remember from “MTV Home” and “neoParadise” ” . "Above all, what the show takes over from its predecessors on ZDFneo and MTV" should be praised .

Alexander Krei from DWDL.de came to a more positive conclusion and praised, among other things, the similarity to the predecessor neoParadise with the “customarily strange belly bands” and a “fabulous report by Olli Schulz” . It is not about mainstream entertainment, but about "a show that shows the passion of its makers" , which ProSieben "recovers a good piece of the recently somewhat lost profile" . Christian Spolders from RP Online rated the second issue as negative, like the first. After the fourth episode, he noticed an upward trend.

The commission for the protection of minors in the media assessed the seventh episode of the second season as impairing the development of young people under the age of 18. The reason was the Dawn of the Gag section . The protagonists, who could serve as a figure of sympathy and identification, had used alcohol as a joke without referring to the dangers of alcohol consumption.

In October 2014, Arno Frank from Spiegel Online reviewed a program with the conclusion: “Your jokes are silly, your questions poor - and your show is still entertaining.” He particularly praised the numerous insider gags and hidden allusions: “Who [she] but recognizes, may be formed at the same time feel good time. " .

There was some criticism that the show contained content from the Jimmy Kimmel Live! copied. So could Matthias Schweighofer in the first episode of the third season's wardrobe until shortly before the end of the show do not leave. The entire action, including going live in the cloakroom and begging Schweighöfer to ask him at least one question about what was prevented by an unexpected, sudden event, was already on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to see, but there with Matt Damon as a victim.

There was also criticism for the parody of an Edeka commercial in December 2015. Udo Walz took on the role of grandfather and was killed by a shot in the head by Grandma Violetta. Unlike in the actual commercial, Walz was previously abused by all the actors in the parody for faking his own death. Like the actual spot, the parody ends with a dinner in which the grandfather lies dead next to the table while he is one of the partying in the Edeka advertising.

In the reasons for the judgment for the Grimme Prize 2014 , the jury described the crossing of borders as a trademark of Heufer-Umlauf and Winterscheidt. She finds that there is “at least no one in sight who could hold a candle to them in the programs of the major broadcasters […] far and wide” and describes the show as the “funniest lucky bag in German television entertainment” . The show receives special praise for the fact that it has developed further since MTV Home and no longer focuses exclusively on the love-hate relationship between Heufer-Umlauf and Winterscheidt.
