Andreas Schmidt (swimmer)

Andreas Schmidt (born September 22, 1959 in Düsseldorf ) is a former German swimmer who competed for the Federal Republic of Germany . The freestyle swimmer won ten relay medals at world and European championships.

Athletic career

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Andreas Schmidt was eliminated from the 400 meter freestyle run. In the 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay, Schmidt swam in the lead, in the final, the relay with Klaus Steinbach , Peter Nocke , Werner Lampe and Hans-Joachim Geisler took fourth place behind the relays from the USA, the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom. Schmidt won his first international medal at the European Swimming Championships in 1977 when he won the title with the 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay consisting of Steinbach, Schmidt, Jürgen Könnecker and Nocke. In 1978 Schmidt won his first German championship title in the 200 meter freestyle, which he was able to defend in 1979 ; from 1980 to 1983 he then won the 100 meters freestyle.

Schmidt won three medals at the 1978 World Swimming Championships in West Berlin. The 100-meter freestyle relay with Andreas Schmidt, Ulrich Temps , Peter Knust and Klaus Steinbach achieved the silver medal behind the US relay, the 200-meter freestyle relay with Schmidt, Knust, Karsten Lippmann and Frank Wennmann received bronze behind the US squadron and the Soviet Union squadron. Finally, the individual tier relay with Klaus Steinbach, Walter Kusch , Michael Kraus and Andreas Schmidt won silver, and relay gold went to the United States here too. In the individual competitions, Schmidt took sixth place over 100 meters freestyle and eighth place over 200 meters freestyle.

In 1981 Schmidt won bronze at the European Championships in Split with the 100-meter freestyle relay made up of Peter Knust, Wilfried Kühlem , Michael Groß and Andreas Schmidt. The 200-meter freestyle relay with Michael Groß, Gerald Schlupp , Andreas Schmidt and Frank Wennmann won the silver medal behind the Soviet relay. In Split, Schmidt took fourth place in the 100 meter freestyle. Schmidt won two relay bronze medals at the 1982 World Swimming Championships in Guayaquil: with the 200-meter freestyle relay consisting of Schmidt, Dirk Korthals , Rainer Henkel and Michael Groß and with the layer relay consisting of Stefan Peter , Gerald Mörken , Groß and Schmidt.

Schmidt won his second European title at the European Championships in Rome in 1983 with the 200-meter freestyle relay consisting of Thomas Fahrner , Alexander Schowtka , Andreas Schmidt and Michael Groß. The tier relay with Peter, Mörken, Groß and Schmidt received the silver medal. In the 100 meter freestyle, Schmidt posted seventh. At the end of his career, Schmidt reached fourth place at the 1984 Olympic Games with the 100-meter freestyle relay.

Andreas Schmidt began competitive sports in 1969. At the beginning of his career he swam for the Free Swimmers Düsseldorf club , at the end of 1981 the 1.92 m tall Schmidt moved to the Swimming and Sportfreunde Bonn .
