The Angelini Group is an international Italian pharmaceutical company with offices in 20 countries.

history

The Angelini group started in 1919 in a small laboratory in Ancona . In 1940 Angelini founded the company ACRAF (Aziende, Chimiche, Riunite Angelini Francesco-United Chemical Companies Angelini Francesco), whose main activities are the production and distribution of pharmaceuticals to this day. Immediately after World War II, Francesco Angelini imported vitamin B12 to Italy , a tonic for the treatment of anemia , a disease that was widespread at the time. Under the brand name Dobetin®, he produces a vitamin B12 drug and sells it on the Italian market.

Together with his son Igino, Francesco Angelini decided in the early 1950s to expand to Rome , where the company's management is still located today. The company subsequently diversified and entered the consumer goods market. In 1958, the Fater company - active in the manufacture of baby diapers and sanitary napkins - was founded in Pescara . In the same year, the drug Tachipirina® is launched on the market. The drug is effective against flu infections based on the active ingredient paracetamol .

In 1963, Fater reacted to the big baby boom and launched the first disposable baby diaper on the Italian market with the Lines® brand. Two years later, the first Lines® sanitary napkins went into mass production . After Francesco Angelini's death in 1964, his son Igino took over the management of the company. The 1960s also marked the beginning of a new era in Angelini's pharmaceutical research. From this time on, new active ingredients were researched and tested. Between the sixties and seventies, active ingredients such as oxolamina (against coughs ), benzydamine (anti-inflammatory), trazodone ( antidepressant ) and dapiprazole ( eye drops ) were discovered and developed.

The internationalization process of the Angelini Group began in the 1980s with the establishment of production facilities and business structures in Spain and Portugal . In 1985 Angelini introduced a pain reliever drug for self-medication against headaches under the brand name Moment® in Italy with the active ingredient ibuprofen .

After Igino Angelini's death in 1993, his son Francesco takes over the group and creates an alliance with Procter & Gamble in the area of health and hygiene . In the mid-1990s, Francesco Angelini expanded the agricultural and foodstuffs trading division, which had already been founded in the late 1950s, with a view to diversifying its business activities. Angelini has been represented internationally with wine, oil and sausage products since 1993.

Angelini has been a manufacturer and distributor of generic medicines in Italy since 2000 . In the same year, Amuchina, a Genoa company and manufacturer of antibacterial disinfectants, joined the Angelini group. Between 2000 and 2001, Angelini Helsinn acquired Produtos Farmacêuticos and Helfarma Produtos Farmacêuticos, two Portuguese pharmaceutical companies that merged into Farmacêutica Angelini. In 2002 Angelini acquired Farmamed, a company in Italy that was marketing parapharmaceutical products in supermarkets. In 2003, Angelini entered the herbal and nutritional supplement market with the acquisition of Body Spring . In recent years, Angelini has laid the foundation for further global expansion through trade agreements and partnerships. Initially, the group acquired a significant stake in Elder Pharma, a pharmaceutical company in the Indian market. In 2007 Angelini acquired CSC Pharmaceuticals, a pharmaceutical company active in Central and Eastern Europe (strategic partner of the group since 1998) and the Greek pharmaceutical company Faran. Since 2009 Angelini has been part of Alcavis HDC LLC, an American company that sells antiseptics and disinfectants, and of the Pakistani pharmaceutical company Scharper Pakistan. Between 2010 and 2011, the presence in the wine sector was also strengthened with the acquisition of the Puiatti winery in Friuli and the Bertani company.

In 2011 Procter & Gamble bought the Infasil® brand, the Italian market leader in deodorants and intimate hygiene. In the same year, Angelini took its first steps in Turkey with the acquisition of the pharmaceutical company Cinay Kimya Sanayi Ve Ticaret AS. In 2012, the Angelini Group's product portfolio was expanded to include the ACE® and Neoblanc® brands (household cleaning products) acquired by Fater. Angelini acquired shares in ITF in 2013. ITF is an Italian / German company in the field of perfumes and cosmetics.

Research & Development

Current research projects

The research and development department (R&D) is currently primarily concerned with the development of new drugs , the identification of new indications for drugs already on the market and the expansion of the product portfolio. Angelini R&D is involved in the IDDN (Italian Drug Discovery Network), which includes other Italian pharmaceutical companies as well as public research institutions. The aim of IDDN is to promote collaboration between public and private research in the identification of new pharmacologically active compounds. The most important current projects of R&D concern the following therapeutic areas: pain / inflammation , psychology / neurology ( affective disorders and sleep disorders ), infectious diseases.

The active ingredient trazodone

The antidepressant trazodone, patented and developed by Angelini, is a good example of a multifunctional drug. Trazodone is a serotonin 5-HT2 antagonist and 5-HT reuptake inhibitor and its mechanism of action differs from all other antidepressants: This means that it has different effects depending on the dose in which it is administered. Since the inhibition of serotonin reuptake (5-HT reuptake inhibition) is less pronounced with trazodone than the 5-HT antagonism, a higher dose is required to achieve both effects. At low dosages, such as. B. 50 to 150 mg, trazodone blocks the 5-HT2 receptors, thereby the sleep-normalizing and anxiety-relieving effect is in the foreground. At this dosage only about ten percent of the serotonin reuptake is inhibited. A clinically relevant inhibition of serotonin reuptake is achieved from a dose of approx. 150 mg - from this dose, trazodone has an antidepressant effect in addition to the sleep-normalizing and anxiety-relieving effect: an increase in the serotonin level in the brain is induced and a serotonergic transmission is brought about.

R&D pipeline

The R&D pipeline comprises three therapeutic areas: pain / inflammation, psychiatry / neurology (depression and sleep disorders) and infectious diseases.

Angelini researches

The company works with scientists in the research laboratories of Angelini Research in Santa Palomba and Rome. The research teams have the means from in-vitro models to the preclinical studies and the full clinical development of the drug to cover the entire development process. In the past 40 years, medicines have emerged from Angelini research. Two of them, topical anti-inflammatory benzydamine and trazodone antidepressant, are marketed in more than 60 countries worldwide. In the more recent history of the company, after acquiring the license for the fluoroquinolone prulifloxacin from Nippon Shinyaku, the complete preclinical and clinical development of this new antibiotic as well as the registration and marketing of this new antibiotic was realized in several European countries.
