Annibale Antonini

Annibale Antonini (* 1702 near Salerno ; † August 1755 in Naples ) was an Italian Romance philologist , translator, grammarian and lexicographer.

life and work

Antonini studied in Naples. He toured Germany, the Netherlands and England. In 1726 he settled in Paris as an Italian teacher. He returned to Naples around 1750.

Antonini published a successful Italian grammar in Paris in 1726 and an Italian dictionary in 1735. The latter consists of a short version of the dictionary of the Accademia della Crusca (including the definitions), to which Antonini has added Latin and French word equivalents. In 1743 he published the French counterpart. It consists of a short version (including definitions) of the Dictionnaire of the Académie française , plus Latin and Italian word equivalents. Antonini compensated for the purist, reduced nomenclature of his dictionaries with a modern structure of the individual article.

Antonini's Italian dictionary was provided by Johann August Lehninger (omitting the Latin) with a translation of the Italian definitions and with German equivalents and was published in Leipzig in 1763.

In the foreword to his Italian dictionary, Antonini formulated a detailed and linguistically sound defense of the Italian language against the French contempt widespread by Dominique Bouhours (Hausmann 1990).
