St. Vincent (born September 28, 1982 in Tulsa , Oklahoma ), real name Annie Clark , is an American multi-instrumentalist , singer and songwriter .

Career

In her stage career she has already gained experience as the opening act for Arcade Fire , Briertone, Jolie Holland , John Vanderslice, Midlake , Tracy and the Plastics, Tuck & Patti and Xiu Xiu . She was also a member of Sufjan Stevens ' live band in 2006 .

In 2006 she also released her first EP Paris Is Burning in parallel to her tour with Sufjan Stevens . Paris Is Burning includes three songs, of which These Days is a cover by Jackson Browne.

Her debut album Marry Me was released on July 10, 2007 on Beggars Banquet Records . On Marry Me she is supported by drummer Brian Teasley (Man or Astroman, The Polyphonic Spree), David Bowie's long-time pianist Mike Garson and horn player Louis Schwadron (formerly with Polyphonic Spree ). In 2007 she appeared as a member of The Polyphonic Spree on the album The Fragile Army . In autumn 2007, St. Vincent did their first headlining tour in Germany.

Her second album is titled Actor and was released worldwide on May 5th, 2009 on the 4AD label. Produced by Clark himself and John Congleton of The Paper Chase and using the GarageBand music program , it reached number 90 on the US Billboard charts . In Germany the album was released on May 1st, 2009 due to the different days on which new CDs are released.

On September 12, 2011, her third studio album was released under the name Strange Mercy . It received mostly positive reviews and reached number 19 on the Billboard charts.

In September 2012 she released the album Love This Giant together with David Byrne . It was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Recording Package category.

The album St. Vincent was released in February 2014 . For Clark, number 12 on the charts not only brought her best ranking up to that point in the USA, but also good placements in Europe. For St. Vincent she received the Grammy in the category Best Alternative Album .

She was nominated twice at the 2019 Grammys . She won the Best Rock Song category with the song Masseduction and her album of the same name was also nominated for Best Alternative Album .

On the occasion of the Grammy Awards 2020 , a tribute concert for Prince took place on January 28, 2020 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles under the motto "Let's Go Crazy: The Grammy Salute to Prince", at which St. Vincent played the song Controversy ( 1981) sang from the album of the same name . The concert aired on U.S. television on April 21, 2020, the fourth anniversary of Prince's death.

Private

Clark was in a relationship with British model Cara Delevingne from 2014 to September 2016 . From October to December 2016, the singer was in a relationship with actress Kristen Stewart .
