António Augusto Cardinal dos Santos Marto (born May 5, 1947 in Tronco , Portugal ) is a Portuguese Roman Catholic Cardinal and Bishop of Leiria-Fátima .

Life

António Augusto dos Santos Marto studied at the seminary of Porto and received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Vila Real on November 7, 1971 . He was at the 1978 Pontifical Gregorian University for Doctor of theology doctorate and then taught theology at the Catholic University of Porto .

On 10 November 2000 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Bladia and ordered him to auxiliary bishop in Braga . The bishop of Vila Real, Joaquim Gonçalves , donated him episcopal ordination on February 11, 2001 ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Braga, Jorge Ferreira da Costa Ortiga , and the Bishop of Setúbal , Gilberto Délio Gonçalves Canavarro dos Reis . On April 22, 2004 Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Viseu . Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on April 22, 2006 Bishop of Leiria-Fátima. As such, he received Benedict XVI on May 13, 2010. in the international pilgrimage site of Fatima and there on May 13th 2017 Pope Francis on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the first apparition of Our Lady in 1917. Between 2011 and 2014 Marto was a member of the Commission of the Bishops 'Conferences of the European Community (COMECE) for the Portuguese Bishops' Conference .

In the consistory of June 28, 2018, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in the college of cardinals . The takeover of his titular church took place on November 25th of the same year. On October 6, 2018, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life .
