Antônio Augusto de Assis

Antônio Augusto de Assis , (born December 5, 1863 in Lagôa Dourada , Minas Gerais , Brazil ; † February 7, 1961 ) was a Brazilian clergyman, Roman Catholic Archbishop and Bishop of Jaboticabal .

Life

Antônio Augusto de Assis received on 24 April 1892, the sacrament of Holy Orders .

On July 29, 1907, Pope Pius X made him titular bishop of Sura and auxiliary bishop in Pouso Alegre . The Archbishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro , Cardinal Joaquim Arcoverde de Albuquerque Cavalcanti , donated him episcopal ordination on November 17th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Pouso Alegre, João Batista Corrêa Néri , and Eduardo Duarte e Silva , Bishop of Uberaba . On April 29, 1909, he was appointed Bishop of Pouso Alegre.

On February 7, 1916, Pope Benedict XV appointed him . the first bishop of the diocese of Guaxupé, established four days earlier . The inauguration took place on May 28 of the same year. After only two years, the Pope released him from the leadership of the diocese of Guaxupé and appointed him titular bishop of Diocletianopolis in Palestine and auxiliary bishop in Mariana . On February 24, 1922, the newly elected Pope Pius XI. the personal title of Archbishop and appointed him titular Archbishop of Berytus .

On July 31, 1931, Pope Pius XI appointed him. the first bishop of the diocese of Jaboticabal, established two and a half years earlier . He held this office for almost thirty years until his death. From 1950 he was later succeeded by José Varani as coadjutor bishop .
