Anthony Theodore Lobo
Anthony Theodore Lobo (born July 4, 1937 in Karachi ; † February 18, 2013 in Rawalpindi ) was Bishop of Islamabad-Rawalpindi .
Life
Anthony Theodore Lobo, son of a family from the Portuguese colony of Goa , moved to Karachi before the independence of Pakistan . He attended the Principal of St. Lawrence's Boys School in Karachi, then the prestigious and oldest school in Karachi, St. Patrick's High School . He entered the Christ the King Seminary in Karachi and was ordained a priest on January 8, 1961 . After working in the Archdiocese of Karachi , Lobo studied during the Second Vatican Council at the Institut Catholique de Paris , and later also at the University of Karachi and Harvard University . He was the principal of St. Lawrence's Boys School and later of St. Patrick's High School in Karachi.
Pope John Paul II appointed him on June 8, 1982 auxiliary bishop in Karachi and titular bishop of Oescus . The Archbishop of Karachi, Joseph Marie Anthony Cardinal Cordeiro , donated him episcopal ordination on October 1 of the same year ; Co-consecrators were Emanuele Gerada , Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Pakistan , and John Joseph , Auxiliary Bishop in Faisalabad .
On May 28, 1993 he was appointed Bishop of Islamabad - Rawalpindi . His resignation was made by Pope Benedict XVI. on February 18, 2010.
Act
Lobo was committed to education and upbringing in Pakistan. In 1986 he founded the St. Michael's Convent School . In his diocese of Islamabad-Rawalpindi he built 70 schools and the Sargodha Institute of Technology (SIT) . In 2008 he initiated a partnership between the Notre Dame Institute of Education and the Australian Catholic University .
Lobo was Chairman of the Education Commission of the Episcopal Conference of Pakistan and Chairman of the Office Of Education of the Federation Of Asian Bishop's Conference . He was a member of the senate of Sindh University, Khairpur, and Shah Abdul Latif University, Jamshoro.
He has published numerous works on education and was awarded "The President's Pride of Performance" in 1990 by Pakistani President Nawaz Sharif .
Anthony Theodore Lobo was a supporter of Shahbaz Bhatti , a Pakistani politician from Panjab who became the first Christian minister for minorities , but was murdered two years later by a splinter group of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) for his work for more religious tolerance .
After meeting Andrea Riccardi , the founder of the Catholic Community of Sant'Egidio , he became involved in Sant'Egidio in Pakistan.
