Antonín Frič

Antonín Frič (often also Anton Fritsch ; born June 30, 1832 in Prague ; † November 15, 1913 ibid) was a Bohemian zoologist , paleontologist and geologist who worked for a long time in the field of ornithology , but in later years turned to ichthyology and the Turned to paleontology . He made a decisive contribution to the development of the Bohemian museum system .

Life

Frič came from a respected Prague family. In 1852 he became a private lecturer and in 1870 an associate professor in Prague. From 1880 he held the chair of zoology at the Prague Polytechnic .

Since the beginning of his university career, he had been concerned with the world of birds and began collecting. From 1852 to 1870 and 1898 he self-published the Natural History of Birds of Europe , which among other things showed 708 images of European bird species in different clothes on 61 color plates based on his designs. In addition, articles by Frič on the bird world of Bohemia , Croatia , Dalmatia and Montenegro have appeared in various journals . Particularly comprehensive is the summary of the birds of Bohemia , the 1871/1872 in the Journal of Ornithology appeared and the Systematic Review of the birds of Bohemia by Anton Alois Palliardi anknüpfte. After 1880, only a few ornithological publications appeared, as Frič now turned more to paleontology in Bohemia and the research of recent fish. His main work on the fossil fauna of the Cretaceous and Permian corresponded to a division of labor among the Bohemian geoscientists of the time.

Parallel to his university activities, Antonín Frič was active in the Comité founded in 1864 for the scientific research of Bohemia , where he temporarily played a leading role as secretary with its chairman Karl Kořistka . There was a connection to the Society of the Patriotic Museum in Bohemia , in whose collections he worked as custodian for the zoological department from 1855 . In 1880 he took over the management of the zoological and paleontological department in the Bohemian State Museum . Since the mid-1860s, Antonín Frič has been studying the Cretaceous strata in Bohemia. His palaeontological studies published from 1870 onwards contributed significantly to a better understanding of their stratigraphic structure. In 1880 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Together with Jan Krejčí he worked on the geological survey between Kuttenberg and Böhmisch Trübau , from which the comprehensive explanation of the 6th part of the Geological Map of Bohemia arose in 1891 . Further mapping work dealt with the areas between Teplitz and Reichenberg , Eisenbrod and Jitschin as well as Braunau and Nachod .

He found his final resting place in the Olschaner cemeteries in Prague
