Johann Anton Franz Karl Willburger von Willburg (born December 27, 1728 in Lingenau , Vorarlberg ; † May 26, 1789 in Gmünd , Carinthia ), known as Anton Karl von Willburg , was an Austrian doctor who was particularly known for his work in the field of Ophthalmology is known.

Life

Anton Karl von Willburg was born as the son of Johann Willburger von Willburg, Ammann von Lingenau and his second wife Maria Johanna nee Rauchmüller. A scholarship he got the opportunity in Augsburg a surgical making training. He then traveled and came to Strasbourg , where he continued his education in anatomy and surgery. In 1757 he met Count Ernst Maria von Lodron -Laterano in Salzburg . He officially took him to Gmünd as a valet . There he probably initially held the position of personal doctor . Through his skills, he soon earned the goodwill of his employer, but also the local population. At that time, medical care in Gmünd and in Upper Carinthia in general was inadequate. There were some bathers , but their medical knowledge was described as insufficient. The next doctor was based in Villach and was responsible for all of Upper Carinthia.

Immediately after his arrival, Willburg applied for permission to work as a surgeon at the Landeshauptmannschaft in Klagenfurt , which was probably initially rejected due to the resistance of the two Bader resident in Gmünd and the doctor in Villach. Therefore, with the help of Count Lodron, he turned directly to Empress Maria Theresia in Vienna and asked for permission there. That seems to have been successful in the end, because in 1759 his establishment as a surgeon in Gmünd was officially confirmed by the Provincial Government of Carinthia. On August 20, 1759, Willburg married the daughter of his former adversary, Balthasar Joseph Hinteregger, a bather in Gmünd, Maria Anna Hinteregger. From this marriage there were 8 children. Two of his sons became doctors and surgeons respectively and both his son Johann Franz Xaver von Willburg and his grandson Anton von Willburg were surgeons in Gmünd until 1872 .

Anton Karl von Willburg dealt extensively with ophthalmology, especially with cataracts, and also worked as a veterinarian . He also published books in these fields. Willburg successfully modified the reclination method, a type of cataract surgery known at the time, in order to simplify it. He published his findings in 1785 in the book Contemplation of the Hitherto Ordinary Operations of Cataracts, with the indication of an easier and improved way of doing them . As a veterinarian, he dealt with sheep and cattle diseases. In 1774 he published the book with the detailed title Instructions for the rural people with the intention of recognizing and curing the diseases of cattle: including the aids and an appendix on the subject of medicine, and explanation of the simple remedies with added Latin names: along with Instructions for the knowledge and healing of diseases in sheep farming .

Furthermore, Willburg experimented with the extraction of sugar from maple around 1767 and published his results. At the same time, the government issued a call for maple sugar to be extracted and used. The expertise of the surgeon Anton Karl von Willburg was also used in a criminal case. In 1770 he autopsied in Malta Jakob Kary, who died under strange circumstances, Eva Kary's husband better known as Eva Faschaunerin . The trial later led to the execution of Eva Kary.
