Antônio da Silva (born June 13, 1978 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a former Brazilian soccer player .

Career

Antônio da Silva began his career with Flamengo Rio de Janeiro , for whose youth teams he played until the end of 1991. After he emigrated to Germany with his mother, he played for half a year for TSC Pfalzel and moved to Eintracht Trier in the summer of 1992 . Da Silva spent the 1994/95 season again at his home club Flamengo. After the attempt to establish himself in professional football after his move from Eisbachtaler Sportfreunde at Eintracht Frankfurt had failed, the technician came after a four-year stint at the regional division SV Wehen in 2003 to the then second division 1. FSV Mainz 05 , with whom he was a regular player in left midfield was promoted to the Bundesliga in the first year .

With two goals against Hamburger SV within three minutes, da Silva secured Mainz’s first Bundesliga win on matchday two . Toni da Silva was also instrumental in the decisive victory to stay in the class: In Mainz's 6-2 victory at VfL Bochum , the Brazilian scored 4-1 himself, prepared the 2-1 and 3-1 directly and led the other three Mainz goals. In the first half of the 2005/06 season, da Silva was the Bundesliga player with the second most assists after Johan Micoud from Werder Bremen . His free-kick goal against 1. FC Nürnberg from over 40 meters was nominated for the goal of the month election.

For the 2006/07 season Antônio da Silva moved to VfB Stuttgart and became German champions together with this club in the same season . In the 2007/08 season he was only used irregularly, but scored his first goals for VfB in the Champions League at Camp Nou at FC Barcelona (1: 3), FC Schalke 04 (1: 4) and against 1 . FC Nuremberg (3-0).

For the 2008/09 season , da Silva moved to Karlsruher SC , where he signed a three-year contract. After KSC was relegated to the second Bundesliga at the end of the season, da Silva was loaned to FC Basel for a year . The KSC terminated the contract with da Silva in July 2010 due to financial considerations.

On August 31, 2010, da Silva received a one-year contract with Borussia Dortmund . As a player without a contract, he had kept himself fit at BVB for about two months and had also completed the entire season preparation there. He was trained in Dortmund by the coach from his time at Mainz 05, Jürgen Klopp . On October 24, 2010 he scored a direct free kick goal in the 93rd minute in his second home game against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and thus his first Bundesliga goal for BVB. He also gave assists in the 4-0 away win at Hannover 96 and in the 4-1 home win over Borussia Mönchengladbach . In April 2011, da Silva extended his contract, which expired in the summer, for another year until June 30, 2012. At the end of the 2010/11 season , da Silva was German champion with BVB, as was the 2011/12 season . His contract, which expired at the end of the season, was not extended. He was officially adopted on the last day of the season.

In the summer break of 2012, the second division MSV Duisburg da Silva signed for one season free of charge. In spring 2014 he ended his active career and went back to Rio de Janeiro .
